Has anyone had good luck or able to recommend a fair priced, reliable mover to ship items from Scotland to USA?

We are trying to obtain estimates to move living room furniture, tools, clothing and some personal items so not a lot of stuff but I'm seeing some very costly options online.

Thanks in advance for your help!! :)

It certainly won't be inexpensive no matter how you do it. It cost me $700 to move 7 small to medium size boxes of personal items from Glasgow to Connecticut last year. You'd be better off leaving the furniture behind and taking only your personal things. You could probably buy new stuff here for what you'd spend with a mover.

I've been trying to get my husband to start taking a suitcase back and forth to move things but now that you pay for bags that may not be so helpful! I know about shipping boxes. I'm trying to find out about one of those containers where you can pack a lot more. He is giving up so much to come live in the US. I dont wnt him to leave all his possessions behind as well. I havent found much on the web or this site so I am hoping someone can make a recommendation for a specific company they have used with good results.

Thanks-

Parcel monkey (parcelmonkey.co.uk) is a good option i've been told. I am still searching for other shipping options. It is so expensive.

I don't know if you have seen this long thread on shipping from the UK. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=128548

You could look at each of those companies and other's mentioned in the thread, and see if they serve Scotland. Many offer online quotes.

Living room furniture is already a lot of stuff. They base the price on how much space the goods take up in the container. So a box of feathers and a box of rocks would cost the same. (Sending things by Air Cargo is the opposite. The feathers would cost much less because of the weight.)

A sofa could be 2 cubic meters on it's own. Charges you may need to add on to estimates is insurance (maybe 4% of the value) and fees that occur at the US port which they can't predict. Our 2.5 cu. meter shipment (23 boxes) with insurance and special crating of an antique clock was around £900. Then we incurred another surprise $615 on the US side because of port charges, ship agent charges, inspections, then a secondary inspection. And we picked up our stuff and cleared customs ourselves at no cost for that part. The point is, the cost can be alot more than quotes you are given. You estimate size, but until you actually pack boxes, it's a guess. Then they wrap and put it on a pallet and measure the whole size, which is bigger than you estimated. You better really love that living room furniture alot.

Well it costs a cople thousand for a new set and if we could cram it all in one container it might be doable or maybe we should stick to shipping some parcels and go on a shopping trip. Thanks for the link!

Howdy, fellow Scottish VJer!

I am also currently thinking about international shipping, and have just had a recommendation from a friend for this company:

http://www.worldwide-packnship.com/

I haven't called them for a quote yet, but I trust they will be a very reliable company to deal with. Hope this helps!

I used Crown Worldwide. They have a base in Aberdeen. I used them before for a shipment to Singapore. They pack everything for you. I sent 180 cubic feet as a part shipment. They hang onto it and put it in with something else. 100 cubic feet is a sort of minimum price, and more than that is not much more. Very helpful folk. Mine will have taken two and a half months when it gets there. The price was half what I thought it would be. Most of my stuff was books and there is no penalty for weight. Insurance was by volume which worked out fine for me as there was nothing individually very valuable in it. (There were other insurance options though.)

Thanks. He decided to just fill suitcases each visit and sell/give away stuff that cant be sent by post or carried here. I was hoping he might bring more of his stuff but it doesnt make sense financially.
