When I moved to Toronto from Halifax back when I was twenty-one, it took me two full years to lose my accent. The main difference is the 'ar' sound which is very hard in the maritimes. (Funny how Anne Murray never lost her accent when she moved to Toronto many years ago.) I thought I sounded like a hick compared to everybody else. Now when I visit relatives 'down east', hearing their accents almost chokes me up.

This is something I forgot that I always found really odd. My uncle and my Aunt always go to the Candian Altantic every summer then too say the "down east" and my parents will saw how was it "down east".

I always looked at them like #######? To me the Canadian east was always just the North East or East coast. The Down part I never did figure out.

Maybe it's derived from that parallel border in the Canadian west that goes from Washington to Minnessota and there for all of them the major places in the Canadian east are more south of the border (same lat as say Oregon). That's the only thing I could think of.

In southern Ontario it made even less sence as it was always North east from where I was...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I worked at a place called The Down Homer's when I lived in NB.

Down homerssss - sounds like a song!

Yes, people say 'down east' allllll the time!

Or 'back east' - you never hear 'back west'. Or maybe you do but i'm west so there is no opportunity for anyone to say it. hmmm

hahah It's always been "down east". Don't know why..My parents and I say the same thing! They taught me to say it!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Has anyone ever had Beaver Tails?

You know, those deep fried pastries.

I've wanted to try them, but I have no clue where to find them here in Canada

All the time...but I lived in Ottawa for 5 years and you could find them everywhere.

I had them for the first time in Hampton Beach, NH where they are known as 'fried dough'. I believe they are also known as funnel cakes in most parts of Canada and the US and can be purchased at almost any amusement park, fair, CNE, PNE, etc. I saw something on TV that 'Beaver Tails' from Ottawa has sold the idea all over the world and has franchises as far away as the Phillipines. The toppings can get pretty bizarre (chilli peppers anyone?). Personally I like them with sort of a cinamonny applesauce topping. Yummy. Is it time for a midmorning break?

Mm, that sounds good.

I've never even had funnel cakes, so I'm not sure what either of them taste like.

OK now that I've just goggled 'funnel cake', I guess that is something else. The shape is not the same as a beaver tail. Basically they are both deep-fried doughy delights and I'm fairly certain neither are on the South Beach diet plan.

Beaver Tail and Funnel Cake are different in terms of what they look like and the consistency of the pastry itself.

I'm a fan of both though.

On a beaver tail you can get...maple butter, cinnamon, etc. toppings. So good.
