Do they take your old passport?

Good afternoon everyone!

Does anyone have information if the embassy takes your unexpired passport when you apply for a new one? Is it possible to keep it and use it up to its expiration date?

Thank you for your help.

What country is the passport? And if you have a new one with a new expiration date, why would you need to use your old one? Are you trying to sell your old one.?

In the USA when you apply for a new passport, they return your old one with the corner cut off to clearly indicate it is void. I think most countries would take the same approach. Clearly the passport is voided and can't be used for travel or identification purposes.

Sorry, I didn't mention I was talking about a Russian passport.

No, I'm not trying to sell the old one)) Why the heck would you think that?

I just want to know if it's possible for me to use my unexpired passport while my new one is being made. Don't want to be without one for 4 months...

I think you have to send in your current passport and they either send you a new one or an update for your old one - and they keep it the whole time.

Anna has her 2 previous Russian passports and they are somehow altered to show they are now void.

Yup. My wife surrendered her passport for the month it took them to make a new one. Now she has the new one and the voided old one. It took her only a month because she had the passport renewed while on a trip to Russia. Apparently there's a new law that requires them to provide the new passport within one month. Maybe it applies only domestically; I don't know.
