I just had one more thought (Wells Fargo sounds like a good idea).

Could your Vietnamese relatives open a dollar-based account and keep

a modest amount there so you could do an electronic transfer from one of

your stateside accounts via the internet?

For example, ING & HSBC both have that facility.

I can link them to another account that I can move money from directly.

In fact I have both of those accounts now and

could transfer in from another account at any time.

Or YOU could open such an account and give one of THEM

privileges to withdraw. You only put money in there (greater

than $X.00) when you are ready to do a transfer and they are

alerted. No overdraft privileges on this one.

I don't see why this shouldn't be possible, but the banks would

positively HATE that because it's so simple and circumvents the

traditionally STEEP costs of remittance.

I find WU to be a good source. I use them, but primarily to show evidence that I help support my husband in VN.

When I'm over there, I use my debit card as I don't like carrying cash and the transaction fee is ~$4.00 per $300 that I withdraw. I would leave my card over there, but it's my only one... :oP

I ask my bank if I could do that! get 2 atm cards for my account and leave one over there. They said she in not on the account so she can not use it.

if she does it is break federal bank laws and could lead in to big trouble if they find out.

I have tried some of the methods & none are easier nor cheaper than a wire transfer. As far as records, each wire transfer creates a document indicating the transaction.

I asked my bank about sending a dublicate ATM card. Anyone can request an additional card. The account holder can use that card as they want. Whoever it is issued to is responcible for its use. There is no reason it could not be sent to another person. The card would be in the name of the account holder but can be used by anyone. That is the potential problem not federal banking laws. They are talking about the use of a stolen card, not a card given to someone you know.

Most Vietnamese Video Stores, book stores and other services offer Money Transfer. They are pretty cheap and your wife would get the money next day. They usually deliver the money to her door step. They call before they deliver the money so they won't miss you. I have had badddd experience with WU before and I hate it. Not gonna use them again anytime soon.

I ask about wire transfer and they gave me a lot higher rate for international transfer, But think there where double tapping. one fee was for a wire transfer and then other one was a international transfer fee. I think it should have been just then international transfer fee, but that was still higher then WU. I guess it depends on the amount at one point the flat wire transfer fee would be cheaper.

Well I know she said federal law, then again who knows if they know the real answer.

Last week I sent money by wire to Thailand. There was zero charge to send it. The Thai bank charged 3 bucks to process the wire.

I met with my bank to get the info about ATM cards. Thier only cautionary note was about the potential of losing the card in Thailand. I dont see that as a huge problem unless someone is sending the pin number with the lost card. They convinced me to try the wire transfer & it worked flawlessly.

The total time I spent on the wire transfer was 10 minutes & again the cost was zero.

All of this depends on what bank is used based on what I see here. Maybe a few minutes on the phone with a few banks will help.

Who wired $ for free?

As I said before Washinton Mutual bank. They are becoming Chase Bank at this time.

They can wire to any bank that has a " Swift" code & in to any account held at the bank.

Ahhh

likely wont be free for long since chase charges fees for everything...
