What is the best way to send money to relatives in Vietnam? I usually use Western Union and I am generally satisfied with their service up until recently. My wife and I sent $100 US to her mother who needed money due to being ill. We have sent her mother money numerous times in the past this way. Today when her mother went to pick up the money, she was told that the money was not available. I immediately logged into my account and noticed the message "transfer canceled." I contacted Western Union to inquire about this and was asked if I knew the person I was sending money to. I responded that I did and was asked my reason for sending the money. I told the Western Union representative that it was none of their business and that I do not need a reason to send my money to my extended family. I was later told that I could try and sent the money again in 48 hours and that that the funds from the previous transaction would be transferred back into my account within 5 days!

It should be much cheaper to have your bank wire transfer the money. Washington Mutual for example does not charge a fee to do this if you have an account with them. When I do this my mother in law is charged about 2 dollars at her bank to recieve the funds. The transaction is done in a very short time.

It's just fraud protection. No need to worry about anything else. They have a duty to know who is using their online service and to verify that the cardholder information being used is authorized by the cardholder.

Yes it suck when you use their online system and it cost more then if you go to a western Union place. I found it was just better to take the cash for the ATM and walk next door to the WU office. I tried Paypal Debit card but take 3 to 5 days to transfer the money. Debit card work too. Just get one in her name and sent it to her. You can refill them in the USA. Overall I think the cheapest.

I use Wellsfargo remittance account. It only costs 3$ per transaction and I can send up to 3,000 per transaction and do as many transaction as I want to. I transfer directaly into my wifes account with the Vietnam Income bank. If I do it before noon it gets there the next day thats about 12 hours later because they are 12 hours ahead of time here.

My family and I use Hoa Phat to send money to relatives in Vietnam. They have locations in most locals with a large Vietnamese population. Unfortunately, their Boston location is the closest one to you in NYC. The charges are incredibly cheap. Charges are dependent upon the amount being sent and the recipient's location. It costed $10 to wire $500 to my aunt in Dong Nai province (about 100km from HCMC). It is personally delivered to her home in US $100 within 24 hours. A receipt with the recipient's signature is faxed back to the US office of Hoa Phat where the sender can pick it up.

There are similar services in NYC that you can have wire money to Vietnam. Here is one that I found on the internet; http://www.legoitienle.com/locations/

I don't know about Vietnam but I do it the easiest (cheapest) way imaginable to Thailand.

I can get Amex travelers checks free from my credit union.

I just put her as the payee and send it regular mail.

I've never had one lost.

If it was lost I could recoup the loss 100% because they are guaranteed.

She deposits it in the bank where she has an account.

End of story.

But again, I don't know if that is possible in Vietnam.

Are there any countries in the world where Amex travelers checks are not honored?

All this Western Union, bank to bank transfer, I've never done that ever.
