i had my high school friend in the US as my joint sponsor for the i-864 and the CO in the embassy in Singapore did not accept him as a sponsor.

she said there is a rule change requiring the sponsor to be a relative, but i didn't ask to see it in writing...my high school friend is making way beyond the poverty line to support his wife and myself....the i-864 is a legal contract that he signed stating that he agrees to support me...i find it unreasonable that the CO will not accept him as a sponsor just because she doubts the credibility of his intention to support.

anyone ever encounter this? what should i do?

The Embassy/Consulate has the latitude to judge not just the contents of the affidavit of support but to evaluate who this person is - in other words, their relationship to you.

You would be better off using a family member as a co-sponsor whenever possible (which you will likely need to do at this point).

Oh wow, I am so sorry about this, how did they let you know that they didn't accepted your friend as the joint sponsor?

I hope they give you a second chance, and I guess you should ask a relative for help.

Good luck,

Regards
