Need help perfecting my steak and ale pie recipe

I found a banging recipe for steak and ale pie on line using Hobgoblin ale which is lush and even better i can get the bottles of it near me in Santa Monica.

So i have sorta got the filling down,

problem is i can't get the pastry right. i used a ready made puff pastry like they said in the recipe and it just shrank and didn't cook. plus i want a pastry base and top, which is puffy and flakey.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I make cheese and onion pasties, and I use pepperidge farm pre-made puff pastry. They come in sheets and shells. I believe the shells would work well for you as you cook them then take the lid off and fill them and put the lid back on. I find that it's easiest to cook the shells and the filling separately and then fill the shells. I've also found microwaving them make them puff even more!

thanks for that i used an aussie brand of ready made puff pastry and it didn't work so well being cooked on the pie, i was thinking trying things from scratch.

I tried making it from scratch and it came out great but took forever and actually cost almost double it did to just go buy a box of pre made sheets.
