I'd have to gather facts because maybe I am remembering wrong. But I had to read a very detailed book about the Civil War in college. Yes Lincoln started out not really caring about the slavery issue as much as people assume he did or the equality issue. But why would he have been called "Black" by his opponents at that time if he hadn't at all been different in his views than the common view of the day about racism, etc. I think he softened to the issue over time and changed by his 2nd term. Anyway yeah things about him are blown out of proportion. I still think for his day, and compared to many other prominent leaders, he definitely took the nation towards equality more than ever before. After his death, no one stepped up to continue it in the same pace he would have wanted.

Most of the myths are just rehashings of old arguments.

I disagree. The busting of these myths are supported by documented writings and actions of Lincoln, which serve to question the unstable foundation for which the Lincoln idolizers stand.

Read Lincoln's speeches and his personal letters. That's where you'll get the most accurate assessment of who he was and what he stood for. Everyone has their own flaws (read about Andrew Jackson), but Lincoln was a great President and a great man.
