Hi all

My son is 18 years old and just finished High School.

He is thinking alot about joining the military, but we don't know if he can do it as a none US Citizen.

Can anyone tell us anything about this?

To the best of my knowledge, yes he can. I believe it can shorten the path to citizenship as well.

Most definitely! My friend who holds a Green Card joined the Army 4 years ago.

Even though my brother became a medical doctor with the Army, suggest he look into the Navy for career opportunities, anything from shore patrol to nuclear physics.

Steer him away from the Army. Navy and Air Force are better options. I work on an Army Fort and we have memorial services every week for our soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. You dont see that on the news but it is a reality.

There's coverage but the Iraq War has been winding down and Obama's president so it's not as controversial now.

"The nation is approaching a combined total of 5,000 military deaths in Iraq, where the pace of U.S. casualties is declining, and in Afghanistan, where it is rising. All the remains have come through this air base, site of the nation's largest mortuary.

Since April, journalists have been permitted to cover what the military calls "dignified transfers" of bodies from incoming flights to the mortuary. And, in a less-publicized change at the same time, the government began to pay for relatives' travel here for such arrivals.

News organizations' interest or ability to cover routine transfers quickly faded; only the Associated Press regularly assigns a photographer.

But relatives — who previously were not encouraged by the military to attend the arrivals and rarely did — now are coming to more than 70% of them.

'The Dover Test'

During the Vietnam War, images of flag-draped cases arriving at Dover (and Travis Air Force Base in California, until 2001 the military's other domestic mortuary) symbolized the war's terrible cost.

After Vietnam, American leaders contemplating military action began referring to "the Dover Test:" How would Americans react to those grim sights on the air and in print?

During the Gulf War, the first Bush administration prohibited news media coverage of returning casualties, supposedly in the interest of privacy. When the policy continued during the Iraq war, critics cried coverup.In 2004, Joe Biden, then a senator from Delaware, said the fallen "are essentially snuck back into the country under the cover of night, so no one can see that their casket has arrived."

This year the Obama administration re-opened the arrivals to journalists, provided families approve. (About seven in 10 have.)"

BTW, the chances of getting killed in action is fairly low compared to other wars.

This is old news but far more soldiers have served since 2005 when this was written-

"Well over 1 million U.S. troops have fought in the wars since Sept. 11, 2001, according to Pentagon data released to Salon. As of Jan. 31, 2005, the exact figure was 1,048,884, approximately one-third the number of troops ever stationed in or around Vietnam during 15 years of that conflict.

More surprising is the number of troops who have gone to war since 9/11, come back home, and then were redeployed to the battle zone. Of all the troops ever sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, one-third have gone more than once, according to the Pentagon. In the regular Army, 63 percent of the soldiers have been to war at least one time, and almost 40 percent of those soldiers have gone back. The highest rate of first-time deployments belongs to the Marine Corps Reserve: Almost 90 percent have fought."

Can join the Marines or Navy Seals to become a man, Air Force is also pretty darn though for survival training if you get shot down in enemy territory. Wouldn't recommend the Navy if you get seasick. But some things to think about, what happens if you don't get killed, it's up to you to earn a living when you get out, so might as well take advantages of education while you are in with some civilian related job.
