Sawasdi all Thai friends,

As a new comer, I need advise as follow:

RE: SSN

1. I've got my SSN here from many years ago while I was studying in CA. Now I entered the US again with K-1 visa. Is my SS number and SS card still valid? Or I should contact SS to get a new one?

RE: Maiden name vs husband's

1. Should I choose to have my maiden name or my husband's last name while filing for AOS here?

-Do we have options to chooe either one or it is mandtory we use husband's?

- I prefer to use my maiden name. So it will be still consistant with what's shown on my passport.

2. What are pros and cons keeping my maiden name vs. using husband's?

Please advise,

Million thanks in advance.

Monchan

P.S. I am in Glover Park, Washington DC now. Would love to meet thai friends in the area. Drop me a line, please.

Sawasdee Krap,

Welcome to VJ and back to the US.

As for your SSN, you need to call or go by your local SSA office and see if you are still in the system. If so, no problem. If not, you can apply for a new SSN as long as your I-94 is valid and not within 14 days of expiring.

As for your last name, you do not have to change it to your married name if you don't want. There are no pros or cons. I would like to say however, just because you change your last name to your husband's, you will not have any problems traveling with your Thai passport still in your maiden name.

If you do go with your husband's last name, you will need to go by the SSA office with your marriage certificate and get a new card with the new name printed on it.
