Maybe my comments are not relevant since they're not based health/administrative related industries..

One thing you can try is contacting staffing agencies. My husband is in software development field. We contacted about 22 recruiting/staffing agencies, by phone or in-person. We both spent about 2-3 hours every morning looking at job sites like monster/careerbuilder as well as following up with recruiters. They had 3-4 phone interviews lined up in a period of 2 to 3 weeks. The one big problem we kept hitting is not having "US experience" or "X industry experience" (replace X with finance, mortgage, etc). He finally landed a job through craiglist ad last week at a small company and started a job this week.

Also, don't be surprised if you've to take up a job with lil less pay or lower designation. Tons of qualified people out there who are willing to take jobs that they're too qualified for.

I'm facing the same problem, I have 8 years of experience and I worked with a US companies and been a consultant for few other and still "YOU DON'T HAVE US EXP"

I've been looking for 3 months now :crying:

volunteering,internship,co-op programs may work to get a US experience.I know it does not pay the bills ,but it will open up some doors, believe me!..good luck......

These type activities help new-hire type candidates. For people with couple years of exeprience, the chances of getting internship or co-op are slim to none. These people do specifically asks for IT experience... Do you know where can we go for volunteering in IT field work?

My husband is doing some internship work now. Being able to put experience working in the United States helped him to land a job. We were looking since April but once he took that internship he was able to get a job after 1 month. You should also consider taking part time jobs as once your foot is in the door it is easier to get a full time position.

These type activities help new-hire type candidates. For people with couple years of exeprience, the chances of getting internship or co-op are slim to none. These people do specifically asks for IT experience... Do you know where can we go for volunteering in IT field work?

Try any major company! My husband asked a very large nonprofit organization with a very good reputation in my state for an IT internship. He is not fresh out of college and when they asked him why he would want to do an internship he told them he needed experience in an american working environment. There are plenty of opportunities out there you just have to be patient and keep your eyes open.

I received my green card last month and since then I've been looking for a job. So far, I had only one interview. I don't know why, but it looks like my resume with more that 10 years of administrative experience, has not let any headhunter impressed. I've been looking for anything, even in stores like macy's, even if I have a degree in Business. I was wondering about other immigrants experiences looking for their first job in the US. I don't know if it is the economy or if it is really that hard to get started. I spend hours every day posting my resume on the internet or sending them out, answering ads from websites like monster or craigslist. Please, if you have been there, would you give me some hints about how to find my first job in this country. I appreciate any help. :)

Do not give up. Google... career - (name of company) and do the online application.

I taught in Canada but wasn't sure if my qualifications would transfer here. So far they did, I had a public school teaching interview last week and was hired to substitute and to subsequently teach longer assignments.

So, I think it's a good idea to use your experience and qualifications in your home country if possible and try get a job here.

The Lord is my strength and my shield,

My heart trusted in Him and I am helped,

therefore my heart greatly rejoices,

and with my song I will praise Him.

just my two cents..since it's an office admin type of job, dealing with agencies is better....you mostly get that kind of job via agencies as opposite to the direct hiring....

they have contact with so many companies who need people like u

I found the most promising job postings were on the industry assciation websites. For example, I work in the public relations industry, and there are a couple different associations that do job postings. Obviously this doesn't work for every industry.

I actually found my current job through a tweet on twitter with a link to the job postings - the twitter feed was run by the association website with the job center.

I also had a few interviews at places by applying for things off Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com. I also had a referral interview from my husband's co-worker who used to also work in my industry.
