By the logic people are presenting...harmless jokes about a person based on his or her nationality...it's perfectly acceptable to have called Zidane a "dirty terrorist" because of his Algerian background?? Just a harmless generalization, right?

ummm....I don't think so.

there is a difference between generalizing (not harmlessly) that someone is a terrorist or generalizing (harmlessly) that an entire nation likes delicious crepes. At least I see a difference there.

No offense to people that do this but i never understand responding to a thread and not saying anything, or at least not saying anything clearly. If your view is "whatever" then i would suggest moving on you know? If you have a view to express then do so. Don`t be shy.

Sometimes it's just not worth it... not worth getting knickers in a knot when you aren't going to change someone's mind. And I'll move on when "I" decide...ya know? ;)

But anyway...is THIS considered racist too?

Move on when you want i just don`t see the point in responding and not saying anything. It seems like a waste of your time and it means i have to strain my scroll mouse a little more than i would if you had just restrained yourself from posting a few pointless words and an emoticon.

deal with it... :D

That's silly Viva MExico. You are making a desicion FOR People. What if a french person WAS offended by being generalized about...maybe he or she HATES crepes...what if the italian player had said go back to your f-ing crepes frenchie...still harmless??

Generalizations in general are bad and are where prejudices come from. Why perpetuate it?? I mean you and I will never see eye to eye and that's fine!! I love seeing different opinions.

I work in an all black school. Never had one white student. Would it be ok for me to walk in on the first day of school and make a harmless generalization to the kids about their summer filled with fried chicken, sweet tea and watermelon??

Precisely! Which is why i noted earlier that being a citizen of a particular country has anything to do with race. There are many "races" in the U.S., or France for that matter.

As soon as someone starts making seriously offensive or truly racist remarks I will be the first to condemn them!

Well the word i used was xenophobia which is just as ignorant. Soon i will be American and will go from being a stuck up guy with bad teeth(i aint good on stereotypes sorry) to being a fat arrogant whatever. I will be first to point out to people that as an American i find that offensive. I shall point out that whilst i have a belly it is hardly fat. I have a thick skin and can take the abuse of others but that doesn`t mean i don`t have to say something when a statement is made. It does not matter if the statement offends me personally or somebody else i still see the ignorance and take offense at that.

apparently there isn't.

And where was all this outrage yesterday in the thread that said Zidane was given player of the tournament about how he stunk and needed deodorant? I found that more offensive because he was being attacked as an individual.

Or better yet...i'd love to see anyone in this forum who is white walk into my ghetto school and make a generalization...even a food based one...to my kids.

Your "harmless generalizations" wouldn't be taken too kindly there....would you make your little crepe/beret joke DIRETLY to a french person?? Probably not....

And where was all this outrage yesterday in the thread that said Zidane was given player of the tournament about how he stunk and needed deodorant? I found that more offensive because he was being attacked as an individual.

oh I saw it but I am done arguing with that girl about italian soccer. we've had our go...

a very good question. most of it seems to stem from a certain individual's dislike for me, and you became "collateral damage"
