Johnny Depp finds life in France is more simple

Updated Mon. Jun. 19 2006 9:26 AM ET

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Johnny Depp says the media's perception of him as a European wannabe has been exaggerated, and that he just likes the anonymity of living in France.

In this week's issue of Newsweek, the 43-year-old actor says life is simpler there.

"I've always loved it there," he said. "The phones don't ring as much. Movies are never brought up in conversation. I'll take the kids and we'll go out to the trampoline and the swing set, and we'll stop by the garden and see how our tomatoes are doing. You know, old-fart stuff. Good stuff."

It's a sharp contrast to his early acting days when he became a teen idol starring on the TV series "21 Jump Street."

"Suddenly, you go into restaurants and people are pointing at you and whispering," he said. "You feel spooked by it because that freedom of anonymity is gone. You never get used to that. You'd leave the hotel to go to dinner and there'd be tons of cameras and flashbulbs."

In 2003, Depp gave an interview to the German magazine Stern in which he was quoted as criticizing Washington's confrontation with France over the war in Iraq.

Depp was quoted as saying that "America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth -- that can bite and hurt you, aggressive."

He later said he intended no anti-American sentiment and called it an "inaccurate and out of context misquote." The magazine stood by its story.

Depp, French actress-singer Vanessa Paradis and their two children split their time between homes in France and Los Angeles.

Depp says his life changed dramatically when daughter Lily-Rose was born in 1999. His son, Jack, was born three years later.

"I was never horribly self-obsessed or wrapped up in my own weirdness, but when my daughter was born, suddenly there was clarity," he said. "I wasn't angry anymore. It was the first purely selfless moment that I had ever experienced. And it was liberating. In that moment, it's like you become something else. The real you is revealed."

"True love is falling in love with your best friend,

and only then, will you find the meaning of happiness."

Just like I make english jokes to english friends, argentine jokes to my argentine friends, mexican jokes to my mexican wife. Unlike some people here, they seem to find it funny. Go figure!!!

By the logic people are presenting...harmless jokes about a person based on his or her nationality...it's perfectly acceptable to have called Zidane a "dirty terrorist" because of his Algerian background?? Just a harmless generalization, right?

ummm....I don't think so.

there is a difference between generalizing (not harmlessly) that someone is a terrorist or generalizing (harmlessly) that an entire nation likes delicious crepes. At least I see a difference there.

apparently there isn't.

And where was all this outrage yesterday in the thread that said Zidane was given player of the tournament about how he stunk and needed deodorant? I found that more offensive because he was being attacked as an individual.

A deodorant comment was made in this thread and i responded to that. I have not seen the comment elsewhere. I don`t read many off topic threads just the ones that take my fancy.

As for crepes and terrorists(sounds like my first novel has a name:p) Of course saying a person likes crepes is not as bad as saying somebody likes causing terror. The comment is still rather ignorant though. I mean you can say such things tongue in cheek maybe but the idea behind such a statement is equally as badly informed and ignorant.

How does that clear it up? Celebrities try to retract their statements all the time (usually when they have a movie coming out), but it doesn't mean they're actually sorry to have said it. They're just sorry they said it OUT LOUD.

Are you asking me? If so, the answer is no. That would be a disgusting, stupid, small-minded racist comment. Much different than the tongue in cheek comment about crepes, which has nothing to do with race.

There are certain 'groups' it is 'ok' to make fun of.

For future reference, please note:

1. French soldiers

2. Rednecks

3. Evangelicals

4. Eskimos

5. Indian/Arab convenience store owners

6. Italian mobsters

7. Irish alcoholics

8. Russians who drink vodka

yes I was asking you...why is it sooooo very different...both comments are about "Typical" foods for a certain group of people... I dont' see it as too different at all....

so if it's against a RACE its bad...but against a nationality...it's ok?

I DO think though that most people know when they are making a "crepe-type" statement, they are not doing it without knowledge that all French people don't eat or even like crepes. Christ, if someone wants to call me a McDonald's lover, I'm not going to run for cover and cry or if they want to say....oooh, I must wear trainers won't illicit a response either  ...mainly because it's not true and afterall, if that's the best they can do to insult me, they are pretty lame. And I'd still maintain that the crepe remarks are not terrible insults. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that. Calling someone a terrorist, in this day and age though is a whole different level.
