Hi Everyone! How are all the processes going?

Just wanted to ask your advise about the application of SSN. I actually went to the SSN office last July 27. And showed them my passport and forms. Anyway, the man at the counter was having problems with my name. I have 2 long first names. So, what he did in order to accomodate one "extra" letter from my first name, was to join my 2 first names. He told me he will give me a call after 24 -48 hours to let me know if they were able to generate a number. So, that's what I did. But when I called, the Lady over the phone told me I was not in their system and I need to go back to the SSN office. SO i went back again. Talked to another guy, he told me that I am in their system but am listed under "SUSPECT". (which is funny to me. hheh!). Anyway, i told the guy about the problem with my name, so what he did was put a space in between my 2 first names and remove the last letter. He told me the same thing, to give a call after 24-48 hours. Which I did, and a lady over the phone told me I am not in their system! So, right now, I'm going nuts! I need to get my SSN to get my permanent license from CA and have it endorsed here at my hubby's. aahh!

Now, I'm just waiting and thinking what to do next, what office to go to, who to talk to..am thinking of talking to their head or somehting. I NEVER had problems with my first names before. ONLY here in the US. oh well..###### happens...but I'm going to need your advice and help regarding this matter. Has anyone had this experience before...?

thanks so much and God bless!

I believe that until you are married, and apply for AOS, you will be ineligible for a driver's license anyway. You are here legally for only 90 days after your arrival. When you apply for your AOS, you are here legally only until it is adjudicated.

Is that right? Because my fiance is in the same position right now. Do we have to wait until we are married to apply? Sorry Jeff&Madz, not trying to hijack your post.

Rules for Driver's Licenses vary by State. It is not consistent across the country - what one State requires may be totally different than what another State requires. It is best to check with the Department of Motor Vehicles for your State to find out the specific requirements.

Jeff&Madz, if you continue to have problems with getting your SSN because they don't have enough 'spaces' for your name to fit, why not contact your Senator or Representative and ask them to intervene for you. The employees at SSA seem to be pretty 'hide-bound' and don't adapt well to things outside of their normal experiences. Good luck in getting it all resolved.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

By federal law, every state must now have some means of ensuring that a driver's license or state ID is issued only to persons whose residence in the U.S. is legal. Someone here on a K-1 is legally here for only 90 days, and if not married by then, is not eligible to remain in the U.S. At best, a state could issue a driver's license or ID that is valid only until the end of that 90 days. Each state handles it differently.
