One way vs. Round Trip for Approved K1

Hey guys and gals,

We're looking ahead for my fiancee's entering into the US. Right now, the round trip tickets for the dates we're looking at are around $1000 and the one way tickets are around $3500. If she purchases the round trip ticket, uses the flight leg to the US in order to enter with her K1 visa, and just never flies on that return leg back to her native country, will there be any problems?

I spotted some other forums with similar content, but I couldn't find one with our exact question. Can anyone offer insights or show me a forum topic on here about this?

Many thanks!

Wow. That's a big difference! From my search, a one way from Jamaica is about $40 less than a roundtrip ($461 vs $498).

From all that I've read here, it makes no difference if you book a roundtrip vs oneway. If you do get asked a question about it, just explain why.

Oh my gosh, I didn't believe you until I looked it up myself. Thats just nutso.

I've read posts of other people buying return because it's less expensive and they didn't have any problems.

I doubt you'll run into any problems. I've seen questions like this before, and people have answered saying that, from their own experience, the immigration officer won't mind.

That said, my fiance has booked a round-trip ticket and just won't use the return-ticket. It was, like, 3000 dollars to fly one way from AMS to SFO, and only around 800 to fly round trip. Ultimately, you have to do what works best for you and cheapest is likely what's going to be the best way to go. :P

It is not a problem. It is common for round trip to cost less than one-way on international flights, but that is a big difference, to be sure. Buy what is cheapest...no worries. BUT be sure the ticket originates in her home country!

I know one genius who discovered a round trip from JFK to Kiev was cheaper by about $100 than the round trip Kiev-JFK. So he bought that and planned for his lovely bride to be to fly on the "return" leg. WRONG. Unbeknownst to Einstein when she did not board for the JFK-Kiev "outbound" leg, they CANCELLED the ticket! Needless to say she had to biy ANOTHER ticket when she got to Kiev to leave.

It is OK to miss the SECOND part of the trip, but not the first!

Wow. And if you're limited to the airline, sometimes you have no choice! I'm curious as to how much extra would it cost to cancel the return part? I know that airlines charge for changing schedules and such, but if she cancels after the return after arriving? Just a thought.

The airlines don't mind you canceling a return flight at all, because they get money for one less passenger. I was just curious if there would be any negative ramifications on my fiancee's entry at her PoE.

Thanks guys for all the responses!!

Nope, if the CBP officer ask, tell he/she what you just told us. They will understand it's not a crime to buy airline tickets that you don't intend to use.

Yes you will not be giving extra money to the airline. They are hurting for business and it would be nice if you gave them the extra money.

If you were smart, you'd book the return flight some time in the future when you both want to return to her country and not lose that return ticket.

I confirm that it is no problem to book a round-trip ticket and not use the return ticket. We did it with my bf this summer, no question asked.
