Prosecutors Say MiGs Sold for $5

07 August 2009

By Nabi Abdullaev / The Moscow Times

Nizhny Novgorod region prosecutors opened a criminal investigations into the sale of four MiG-31 supersonic long-range fighter jets to a shell company for $5 apiece, the Prosecutor General’s Office said Thursday in a statement on its web site.

The MiGs — which had been stored at the Nizhny Novgorod’s Sokol aviation plant that produces them — were sold without engines and weapon systems, but even in such a condition they’re each worth at least 116 million rubles ($3.7 million), the statement said. ...

An appraisal valued the MiGs at 153 rubles each, and they were sold in a tender to a shell company, Metalsnab, that had no right to trade in arms or military equipment, the statement said. As a result, the federal budget suffered damages of more than $15 million.

I would've definitely scooped those up.

I can't believe this made it out into the press. This is how business is normally done when govt. agencies and "shell companies" trade arms and equipment. How do you think Venezuela acquires F-16s?

The govt. is smart enough to "sell" them without good engines or weapons systems. Those usually have to be smuggled through a third country and almost always are 2nd or 3rd generation - that way we can still defeat them. They're still plenty good for the new users to use on their own guys or close enemies, but not good enough to "bite the hand that feeds them."

Everyone loves money! (I bet the guy who sold those jets made significantly more than $5 as a "finders fee.")

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

How do you think Venezuela acquires F-16s?

There were no "shell" companies needed for those transactions. They acquired them very openly in the US Government approved "Peace Delta" program. And in fact, even though we refuse to approve the sale of any new craft to the Chavez government (and there is no evidence that they have acquired any new US aircraft), we continue to honor the original maintenance contracts for those planes sold to Venezuela and continue to send/sell them replacement parts for the plane itself, although we do politely refuse to send them parts for the weapons systems on the craft  We also did put pressure on Israel to get them to cancel contracts which would have allowed the Israeli's to "upgrade" the F-16's.

Chavez has occasionally mouthed off about wanting to "give" the planes to Cuba or possibly selling them to Iran. But most of that seems to be simply that --- talk and attempts to grab headlines. He's simply turned into another example of the problem we've faced time and time again during the past century --- selling arms to "friendly" countries and 10 to 20 years down the road finding those arms pointed back at us when the country isn't so "friendly" anymore

That's why we only sell them our old stuff and make sure our new stuff is capable of defeating it with ease.

F-16s, F-14s.... no problem for the F-22. At least our government is smart enough to build a jet with the capability to..... wait a minute, didn't they just cut the funding for the F-22 project?

700 F-22's. Who's Air Force is going to challenge the USA? I say spend the money on the F-35 JSF and be even more bad ####. Hell let's change the name to F-U2 so everyone knows not to mess with us.
