Without a green card, have to check with yours and the Canadian consulates the regulations you need to fly to Canada just like if you came in from the Philippines as to whether you need a visa or not. Same is true with a green card in going to Canada, what the green card does is let you come back to the USA with a Philippine current valid passport.

It's really confusing when I had a US passport and traveling with my wife with a Venezuelan passport, I could go places without a visa, she needed one, even though she was a LPR resident.

As a USC, could just fly or drive into Canada, just like driving to the next state, but they are changing all that. We don't need a visa yet, but no telling about next year.

Green Card is all you need. You can even get a stamp in your passport at the interview and go right away without having to wait for the actual green card.
