'Dream' nightmare - Roof collapses, clubbers injured as party gets too wild in Jungle

Published: Monday | August 10, 2009

Noel Thompson, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

Patrons at the Dream Weekend party at The Jungle nightclub in the western Jamaica town of Negril had a nightmarish experience yesterday morning when a dance-crazy throng caused a roof to collapse, injuring more than a dozen persons.

The Accident and Emergency Department at the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital was kept busy up to late yesterday morning, as the injured were ushered in for treatment. At least four persons were carried in by medical technicians assigned to the Negril Fire Department Emergency Medical Services ambulance, while others were brought by taxi or chartered vehicle.

Emergency personnel had reported early yesterday morning that about 20 patrons had been injured at the club but that figure could not be confirmed. However, The Gleaner was able to ascertain the names of 10 of the injured, two of whom were admitted.

They are Kerry-Gaye Blackwood, 23, of Montego Bay, St James; Kenya Hall, 23, of Petersfield, Westmoreland; Adrian Reid, 25, of Connecticut, USA; Sheena Gordon, 20, of Sandy Bay, Hanover; Andrew Rhoden, 19, of Goodens River, Savanna-la-Mar; Sandra Renford, 27, and her three nieces, Nicosha Spence, 15; Minda Simpson, 21; Kimesha Tapper, 15, all of Clarendon and Llandilo, Savanna-la-Mar addresses; Ruel McGregor, about 15, of Whithorn, Westmoreland.

Persons close to the investigations said at least four other injured persons were taken to the hospital.

DISOBEDIENT DANCERS

"(Deejay Vybz) Kartel was performing onstage and whole heap a people climb up pon di roof to watch di show. Some of the women dem even tek off dem shoes fi grip dem foot properly pon di roof," said patron Sandra Renford.

"Di workers warn dem and ask di people to come off di roof, but dem cuss off di workers," she said.

Renford and her nieces, who were among a packed crowd on the lower floor, said they heard cracking sounds as if the roof was going to give way. Just as they were about to move, the roof came crashing down on top of scores of patrons.

"We were so frightened and scared. We had no idea what was happening, as we tried to crawl from beneath the rubble," another injured patron remarked.

Richard Wallace, director of The Jungle nightclub, said about 40 patrons climbed over barriers on to the canopy without permission and were dancing on the roof. He said his staff repeatedly asked them to get off the roof, but they were verbally abused.

BUILDING INSURED

"The staff went for police assistance and while the officers were heading towards the area, the roof collapsed before they could get there," said Wallace, who confirmed that the building was insured.

He expressed regret at the situation and sympathised with the injured, but blamed the collapse on irresponsible behaviour.

"I can't believe that people could act so foolish and stubborn," he said.

Congratulations, yankeesgirl!

Bunz, I read that other thread about the scammer. What's funny is that Captain Ewok deleted the contents of the PM in the first post, but someone had already quoted it & he left the text in the quoted post.

I know some Christians who are firm believers & practicers of abstinence before marriage.

Jamaicans????

Nope... but I don't know many Jamaicans well enough to know about their sex lives.

I need a drink. I think its time to open my Rum Cream! yummy and I think Im going to ignore my SO's phone call tonight. Feeling like I need a break!

How would he respond to your not answering his call?

Hotlegz, what is a chin tuck?

Glad you asked. I was wondering too.

He would be fine with it. He would assume that I was asleep which I probably will be after I drink the Rum Cream.....

I pay his cell phone bill to call me (because it is so inexpensive 20.00/mo.) and we talk for an hour. There are some nights he doesn't call me, not many. I have a calling card where I can call him. But it works for us if we skip a night or two. Im not in a good way today to talk to him so its best I don't because we will argue.

I do that sort of thing too. If I'm in a mood, better if no one talks to me at all.

Haven't been posting much but decided to post since the board is pretty slow now...i've been meaning to post to answer other posters but by the time i get a chance its like the board went 20 deep in pages and i felt so late so i just don't bother  ....i wanted to post about the adjustment question:

Hubby and I are doing much much better nowadays...we pretty much are on the same page with the hanging out thing cause that was one of our biggest problem...he sees where i'm coming from and how I feel about it and I see where he is coming from...I had a talk w/ my twin brother about me and hubby situation and he bascially told me to just step aside and let hubby do him...I didn't like the advice at first but did it anyway and it actually worked out in my favor...I saw since I stopped nagging he gradually stopped hanging out as much and was more at home with me...its been good every since...now the complaint i have now is that he is lazy as bleep... ...he's been like that from the beginning but i guess its getting to me now cause i'm getting closer to my due date and can't do everything like i use to by myself so when i ask him for help its a whole big thing...ugh...he feels men shouldn't do inside housework... ...he will cut the grass and take out the garbage...but you have to beg him to do like dishes and he wouldn't even think to tidy up the rooms in the house...it is soo annoying...

It takes time to get used to living together. You just need to figure out a way to work together that works for both of you.

I'm a firm believer in letting people know what I am thinking. If you don't, they can't read your mind. If you do, and it doesn't help solve anything, then that's on them.

Hang in there.

Nah. The decision was: we'll do all the chores TOGETHER. I told one of the ladies at church that (she's been married for 20 yrs or so) and she laughed & said "Let me know how THAT goes."

We'll see.

Ha ha......I like her already!

So what do think of wearing socks with sandals?

this is like scratching the chalk board for me. it annoys me. Not that I should care what people wear but i can't even look at..

Absolutely hate it.

And, not just sandals......flip flops! Have seen toe socks with flip flops. I want to scream.

Ha-ha...I remember once A and I were in Canada. We had a long day of fun...going to race cars (forgot the name but you drive around the tracks)...then we went to a casino. Well, neither of us found the prospect of eating out appetizing so I decided that I would fry fish when we got back home.

His roommates girl was pregnant and sloppy as I don't know what. She made some spaghetti dish that involved her using every cooking utensil...pot...pan and dish in the entire kitchen. There was sauce all over the counters...greasy fingerprints on the spices...etc. She left it like that knowing that I was going to cook for A and the other roommate. I can't stand a messy kitchen and refuse to cook until the kitchen is spotless. It was pretty late at night (around 8 or 9 PM)and I asked A to help me clean so the food could be done a lot quicker. His response "Babes...mi well tired. Mi nuh wan fe clean har mess...mi love yuh...can yuh mek white rice wid de fish?"

I said "So, I run on a generator or something? What makes you think I'm not tired. We both know that C is not going to clean up behind herself. Come on let's just get it done." He still wouldn't budge. When I tell you that I took my sweet time cleaning the kitchen...and I went extra extra slow cooking the food...I nibbled on fruit so I was cool. Well, A came down the stairs huffing about im hungry and im belly beg food. I said "Oh baby...I'm sorry but the cleaning took much longer than I anticipated. Soon come okay? I love you. You want me to bring the plate up when I finish?" He kissed teeth and stormed up the stairs. He got his food around 12 AM. LMAO

Well...long story short...if I ask him to help me do something...he is quick to jump on it now. A is a neat freak...but he had to learn that it is a joint effort in this relationship. LOL

:ot: sort of...

this chick was so NASTY...A's roommates said that I had cleaned more in two weeks than they had seen her clean in an entire year. She would just plop down anywhere and eat her food...but then she would leave the leftovers there too...on the sofa...on the floor...on the coffee table...wherever. The kitchen would be a MESS when she finished...and she only prepared food for herself. So, I couldn't stand it and just started cleaning...I pulled out the broom...the vacuum...shook out area rugs....cleaned the bathroom...cleaned the kitchen you name it. The guys came home from work and started smiling so hard. A was so proud. LOL

Then, on Saturdays...the guys would all wake up early and we would clean together listening to dancehall while she stayed locked up in her room. At first I was pissed...then I got over it because I thought about her being pregnant. I went to Canada on two different trips...each two weeks long...when I tell you that she wore the same outfit...every single day...a black tee-shirt and black stretch yoga pants. The guys said that she never changed out of that outfit...even when she went to work. She would take a bath everyday...but she just never changed clothes. *YUCK*

I wonder if things picked up for her after she had the baby.

That is all just nasty. I could not stand it.
