Have any girls run into this here--where the 3rd shot of your MMR will preclude you from getting pregnant?

Is it mandatory, is there a way with not having to deal with the Rubella shot?

I don't remember having to get mmr in three doses? but i can tell you as a kid at age 11 they told us what it was and why we should get it in order to scare us into wanting to get the jab and it worked i can tell you.

mmr stands for measles, mumps and rubella. the scare tactic was if you "now girls this for you but not so much for the boys, but if you don't get this vaccination and later on you have a baby and you catch the virus (i think she was referring to rubella)when your pregnant you can have a deformed baby" if that's a lie the nurse was evil for telling a bunch of 10 yr olds that, but we all shat ourselves and asked for it.

i had to get it again in may for aos as it turned out my records showed i only had measles and rubella  i thought i had been given the full mmr but there you go, and couldn't prove i had mumps as a baby. the doctor didn't even warn me of what we could and couldn't do in terms of children when i got it. i would sit down with your physician and discuss this if you are worried. but they may mean something along the same lines of what evil nurse told us, as they inject the virus into you (can't remember if its one of the live or dead ones).

i am not totally sure as to the process if you wish to ask to be excluded from the vaccinations for ethical or moral reasons, someone else will have to come along and explain this for you.

It appears your doctor is incorrect, either that or just being overly paranoid. When my wife had the shots, we were told it was only unsafe to beomce pregnant less than 1 month after the shot. Looking at the Center for Disease Control website, this appears to be correct.

What is the recommended length of time a woman should wait after receiving rubella (or MMR) vaccine before becoming pregnant?

Four weeks. In October 2001, ACIP voted to change its recommendation for the waiting interval following the administration of rubella vaccine. The interval was reduced from 3 months to 4 weeks. The waiting period for measles and mumps vaccine was already one month.

This was my biggest fear.. because I received those vaccines including Rubella just before my interview (FEB 2009) and got pregnant after that. The hospital where i received the vaccine scared me a lot by saying the baby will have serious problems.. but in the states i told my doctor everytying he said there is nothing to worry about it. now I am 5.5 months pegnant..according to the ultrasounds my son is fine.. Thank God! They say don't get pregnant for 3 months or 6 months after the vaccine, but 1 month waiting is enough in the states.. I got pregnant 25 days after the vaccine,,,my doctor said i am fine.. but of course i recommend you to wait at least 1 or 2 months to get pregnant just to be safe.. because this vaccine issue made me too stress out.. I did not know that before.. There is no scientific findings about it at all..but just to be safe waiting at least a month would be the safest way.. Besides if you got this vaccine when you were child you don't have to worry about its effect to the baby because you were already immunized.. but still i would say wait at least a month just to be safe..

Thanks all...I guess we will wait to see what the Dr. here says. The Dr. in Beirut said 6 months. So maybe the Dr. here will say 1 month, or 2 months. But what Sardes said makes sense anyway be on the safe side and wait a couple of months..

Good luck! Pray for us please.. I pray every day just to have a health baby. This is my first baby and the thing is that you can't stop yourself worrying about your baby's health.. If I don't hear his kicks for a few hours i start worrying again:) you'll see after getting pregnant..because you want everything to be perfect and there is no need to take even a tiny risk..i wish i knew that before.. Keep me posted what your doctor says please..

Some more information with cited sources on the reason women are told to wait to become pregnant after an MMR vaccine is administered...

From http://www.vaccineinformation.org/rubella/qandavax.asp which cites a study done by the CDC:

What if I was pregnant but didn't know it and got vaccinated against rubella?

Women are advised not to receive the rubella vaccine during pregnancy as a safety precaution based on the theoretical possibility of a live vaccine causing disease, in this case "congenital rubella syndrome" (CRS).

Because a number of women have inadvertently received this vaccine while pregnant or soon before conception, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has collected data about the outcomes of their births. From 1971-1989, no evidence of CRS occurred in the 324 infants born to 321 women who received rubella vaccine while pregnant and continued pregnancy to term. As any risk to the fetus from rubella vaccine appears to be extremely low or zero, individual counseling of women in this situation is recommended, rather than routine termination of pregnancy.

The results of the study and the reasoning for the caution are expanded upon in this article: http://miscarriage.about.com/od/infections...mrpregnancy.htm

Thank you for the information. I was totally freaked out when i found out i was pregnant right after receiving the Rubella.. Actually i got pregnant after 25 days or so after the vaccine..but still scared me a lot.. This info that you sent explains there is nothing really to mucch worry about it.. because there is no scientific evidence at al.. but if i knew it before i would have waited at least a couple of months..2 months just to feel more comfortable :)

The advice to avoid pregnancy after rubella vaccination is based on a theoretical risk of problems rather than documented evidence of risk. In the studies looking at accidental vaccination during pregnancy, none of the subjects gave birth to a baby with congenital rubella syndrome and miscarriage rates were not higher than in the general population. Researchers concluded that the rubella vaccination does not seem to be risky in early pregnancy, but doctors continue to advise caution to be on the safe side -- and they still recommend against vaccinating women known to be pregnant.

Only two MMR vaccinations are required here in the US. I am not sure why your doctor is asking for you to have another. I would definitely question that if you are trying to have children soon. If there is question about your immunity to either measles, mumps or rubella, you can order a titer for each of them. Good luck

It's unlikely the poster is still on the boards regularly, since this thread is over 1 year old.

If you are concerned, you should seek reassurance and advice from your medical professionals. They should be made aware of the fact for their records and monitoring purposes, since most of their patients will probably have received these shots years ago.
