We are pretty cool with food. The only recurring theme with us is

she never stops asking me "Can you eat hot food?"

I've proven it to her many times but she always continues to ask...

tifi-hotdog.jpg

Also Asian vs. western food issues.

Many times in BKK she steers us toward "western" food chains and I go along with that

but I really prefer to eat only Thai food (Vietnamese, Japanese & Chinese are OK too)

when in Thailand. The westernized chains often modify their menus to be more suitable

to local tastes.

I am proud to have NEVER gone to McD's, Burger King or KFC while in BKK, even if they

are all readily available. By western chains I'm talking about Sizzler, etc., more upscale ones.

I really don't like Sizzler in BKK. Does not taste the same as USA. I love to eating at Au Bon Pain & Starbucks for lunch. We also go to Siam Paragon food court and eat, we got to two place's, one for Nan to eat and then one for me. Never found a place that has food we both like on the menu. Hope I find some good places we can eat when we go to phuket. I was at KFC one time when my sister and her husband came with me on one trip. That was a trip I will never forget. They could not handle being in a 3rd world at all and could not get over how some people live.

Many times she steers us to a place where I'd rather not have gone,

but I'm game for pretty much anything and would rather not have

food as an issue so I eat anywhere she chooses and she eats anywhere

that I choose.

Are your family & mine somehow related?

I shudder to think of some of their reactions to Thailand.

I don't consider Thailand to be a "developing" country but

rather see the US as a mis-developed one.:whistle:

I have expat background in Lebanon, Afghanistan and Ethiopia

so Thailand by comparison is heaven. There are good people

in all of those countries, but I've never seen a package quite

as attractive as Thailand (BKK traffic excepted).

When Bram was in BKK for 4 months, he rode motocycle around BKK to just find places to eat and he would take me on the back of his motocycle to places I didint even know exist - no western food for us - street food mostly. He is very adventurous.. at night he would go to the bar next to his apartment (a local hang out kind of place) and hang out with local taxi drivers and such and drank with them. they gave him some weird drinks a lot of time since he's the only white face in there and also can speak a little Thai (he went there alone) so they loved to chat with him.

He loved street food - hot food, noddle stand - he loved to walk around in the open air market (food market for locals) we ate the same thing since he loved everything

Bram was so excited to take me places in BKK I didnt know about - he said he's showing me my own country

And that's all in the heart of BKK.

:wow: ROTFL

I'm not squeamish about eating off any BKK "street cart" that my better half steers us to,

but I just had too many incidents of stomach problems with American "fast food"

that I just stopped going because I didn't feel good.

Not trying to be a hero, just keeping my "farting around" in the figurative rather than the literal sense.

In Chiang Mai, I would take the girls to eat at KFC, McD's, and Burger Kiing, because for them it was different, and they liked the whole idea of "farang food".

I would also eat at those places for a change of pace, and as a reminder of "home".

I could, and would, eat Thai food 365 days a year, because I love it, but I don't have a problem eating "fast food", no matter where I'm at.

Oh yeah... we also ordered pizza from Pizza Hut too! :D

You have good standards, and I am in agreement with them.

As a western man, I keep my girl on a primarily Asian diet. Fresh chicken, rice, beef, veggies, some pork. What is not to like? There are good BOOKS on the subject.

Tasty Asian food keeps me and my bride healthy and thin. I've adapted to eat mostly Asian style cooking. I've seen Asian brides come over to US and gain 18 pounds (not preggy) their first 6 months living here, going out to fast food places.

They do say that the only prize that gets bigger in life is the prize you win at the altar, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Eating a healthy Asian diet is fun and makes for a good, sane and sustainable eating lifestyle.

Good luck to you and yours!

When it comes to mall food, another favorite is Auntie Anne's. Love those pretzels! Me and my SOs also enjoy Swenson’s and Black Canyon. The girls of course loved to eat ice cream at Swenson’s, or at a Cold Stone, which ever was at the mall we were shopping at.

To say that as a “farang” you would never eat farang food in a foreign country, would be the same as a Thai person saying they would never eat at a Thai restaurant in the US.

Though I typically won’t eat food that is not part of the local cuisine, I have never been so vain as to say I wouldn’t eat food that was familiar to me, whether it is a chain restaurant, or a local equivalent.

Then again… that’s just me. :)

:crying: not 18 but close enough eventhough we eat mostly home cooking for 4 years now- just that all the propotion are a lot more :crying::crying: But I do like me some good fried chicken though... Bojangle chicken... umm....

Roi, you are right.. we would go to some fast food for Bram to try but he just didnt like how it taste so we would never go back..it's either too sweet or katchup doesnt taste the same.. etc.. I didnt care much for burgers so it doesnt matter to me.

But for Thai restuarant here, I hardly go to Thai restuarant to eat.. I can count on one hand a number of time we went - it's pretty dissappointed everytime we went and I didnt get the taste I was hoping for. So I cook for myself most of the time and havnt been to a Thai restuarant for like 2 years. But if I was in CA or NY, I problably try some Thai food  it's just the area where I live, I'm a better cook

PS. I have to say that the food that they serve for customer are different than the food they serve to their staff thought.. and I love the normal food they gave us for lunch or dinner (I worked there for 10 nights) but wverytime I went there as customer, the food was so different I didnt like it.

I'm having a Thai gathering this sunday.. i'm excited. My friends are exeptionally good cook...

haha

Both me & my better half have to watch ourselves in the waistline area, but it's just a few extra pounds.

Her young adult son gets on her case when she goes to one of those tasty Japanese pastry/bakery places.

We do like Auntie Anne's mentioned by some other posters, but I do agree that an Asian diet is best.

She doesn't like to eat "large animals" but is not really a vegetarian. She doesn't give me any flak

if I want to have something with beef in it once in a while. I do love my veggies too.

They do say that the only prize that gets bigger in life is the prize you win at the altar, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Eating a healthy Asian diet is fun and makes for a good, sane and sustainable eating lifestyle.

Good luck to you and yours!

:crying: not 18 but close enough eventhough we eat mostly home cooking for 4 years now- just that all the propotion are a lot more :crying::crying: But I do like me some good fried chicken though... Bojangle chicken... umm....

I hear ya about the difference in Thai restaurants between what they serve the customers & staff.

On a few occasions I have been lucky to be invited for lunch at the local Thai wat (I live in NY).

The food I had there is strictly TO DIE FOR because it was from a very good restaurant whose owner is a fervent follower.:dance::dance:
