You seriously think they should have addressed healthcare before a tanking economy teetering on the brink of collapse?

Yes

The economy would not have collapsed if they let it alone. If Obama wanted healthcare reform than addressing it first would have given it a good chance of passing. I think this was a big blunder for his administration.

He could do no wrong the first 3 months. He was the rock star. It would have passed easily and quickly if it was first on his agenda. Thankfully it wasn't

How do you know?

Really? The glbal financial system would have been wiped out. Citi - gone. BofA - gone. JPM Chase - gone. Bear Stearns - gone. Merrill Lynch - gone. Wachovia, WaMu, SunTrust - gone. The European financial giants - gone. Exactly how would the global economy have survived that collapse?

yes it would have collapsed & we'd be beyond **'d right now.....Bush started the bailouts. :ot2:

I especially liked the congressman who got asked: why the ** does Obama need to pass HC in 4 days but takes 6 months to choose a fvckin dog for his family? Of course the congressman was dumbfounded.

Because it's a dumba$$ question.....

No, Its a legitimate question. Why so fast?

Because of political realities. Nothing is going to get done in 2010. Now, you may want to pretend that this can realistically be picked up again in 2011 and pushed through before 2012 (another year in which nothing is ging to happen). That doesn't mean that it is realistically possible. The heealth care debate has been going on for decades - it's not like this just started in January of 2009. How many more decades do we need to debate this before every last person is satisfied that this issue has now been debated enough to finally be acted on?

The whole thing was due to years of building up a portfolio of toxic assets that (on paper) promised big returns. Lending collapsed because the financial institutions couldn't offload them.

Sarbanes Oxley legislation also had alot to do with it.

Before enron, corps could hold assets such as realestate as long as they wanted. Only if they sold it, they then had to report it as a gain or loss. Sarbanes Oxley requires them to report every quater on its value for that time period.

OK.... But that would surely only mean that you'd find out about potential problems in your asset portfolio a bit earlier...

Is that a bad thing?

I think these protests are being orchestrated to some extent, seemingly to derail dialogs about healthcare reform.

they may very well be. clearly the amount of people here asking questions & being uspet about not getting answers, shows there are issues. non of us are plants or being directed to do anything.

Thats the thing, some of these people who interrupt these events ARE plants...

do you have PROOF of that? no, i didn't think so. need PROOF the people here are not? check the join dates. we've all been here for quite sometime.

Yes, there is proof. Here is a link, I know, it's the huffington post, but you don't have to read the article there, and subsequently dismiss it as partisan drivel. At the bottom is a copy of the RNC internal memo that was leaked. That memo outlines their strategy, and the memo was distributed to grassroots organizations to coordinate these interruptions.

Yes in a big way. the banks were reporting losses in value not in assets. Of course then the value in the stocks plummeted, leaving them with no capital. We all know that you dont lose money on a stock unless you sell it or it goes to zero.

But if the economy has been running for decades on a foundation of ever increasing debt - this sort of thing was bound to happen. There's a counterpoint here.

Sarbanes Oxley was just a part of it. there are many things that contributed to the problem.

I'm sure - but reporting on the value dodgy assets that would ordinarily be kept off the balance sheet would seem to only make this happen sooner. Whether it happened sooner or later - that wouldn't be the primary reason that it happened at all: but rather the house of cards creative accounting that the economy was built on.
