Hi,

My wife is here now on a K1 visa. When she first arived we went to the SS office and recieved a card in her maiden name. Now four months latter we have recieved her EAD card. So with that we thought we would go get the new card with her married name. So our number is called and I say we are here to get her new card with her new married name. The lady responds and says did you notify immigration of the name change.......This question made no sense so I did not even respond. So she looks at the computer and says ok immigration has not changed her name in the system and I can not do anyting for you. So i say thanks for your help and start to get up. She says wait I will go ahead and submit the paper work but they will not procces it tell you contact immigration. I said she has this card to get a job. The lady says "you havent used this card have you to get a job ....and says it very concerned. I said not yet we just got it....She responds with good because E verification will not work and it will be rejected. So she takes my wifes original ss card and hands us a piece of papper with immigration 1800 number......She says they makes lots of these EAD cards like its some joke to have them and they are investigating.......This visit was turning out to be a joke.......So my wife does not have her SS card and we did not write the number down. She has a interview tommorow and I have a infopass appointment on Monday......Does anyone have any suggestions on this......The visit to SS office was a joke and she took the card with the maiden name on it.......Thanks for any help

The same basic thing happened to us yesterday! Her EAD was not in the system as of yet so they said they couldn't issue her a number. The information sheet they gave us said it could take up to 8 weeks but they would issue a card as soon as the EAD appears in immigrations records, it also said that she could use her EAD for work

I was going to say that it's surprising how often SSA employees don't know what the hell they are talking about, but I caught myself. They are US civil service employees, so why would we expect any different? Most of them are the laziest, dumbest, and most uninformed bunch out there. There are exceptions of course. But the majority of civil service employees only take the job because they know they won't have to work hard and they will get good benefits and pensions.

I would have asked for a manager right away. She had absolutely no right to take away your ss card. You don't notify immigration of a name change, the AOS does that. I still don't understand why she took your card away. Did you ask why the card was issued to you if you weren't supposed to have it?

My advise is go to a different office. Fill out a SS-5 in your married name. Write your social security number where it asks (you don't need the card), and bring your EAD. You should be all set.

I went back today to ask them for the SS # and the lady was so nice. She said sorry for the problem started changing all the information and said you will have your social in a few weeks. So basically it depends on who you get. Same office same information and one person can do it and the other acts like she has no clue. One of the first times I walked out of a goverment office and felt good. I thanked the lady for her being so profesional.

It can take a long time to get into the SS system. It has nothing to do with the brown envelope. If SS doesn''t see you in their system, they are supposed to do a MANUAL VERIFICATION with immigration to make sure you are here legally, etc.

Call them and ask them to verify you manually.
