I watched a show on The History Chanel that purported to prove that brontosaurus still survives in Africa. Now I am very doubtful of this but this argument has been seen before. And before anyone asks, the earth is billions of years old.

Actually, the Bible no where gives a figure for the age of the earth. Those who believe the earth is just a few thousand, or at most tens of thousands of years old generally get that from the list of patriarchs in the first part of Genesis. There are a few problems with this approach. One, there is no total of years given, nor a suggestion that the ages of each patriarch are to be used that way. The phrase, "begat so and so" in Hebrew is not restricted to a father and son, but also can refer to more distant descendants. The purpose of those chapters is not to answer the question of the age of the earth, but to establish lineage. It is not a complete list of names. And even if it were a complete list of direct father to son descendants that was to be added the way the Young Earth people do, the most it could do is give a general range for the life time of Adam. It doesn't take us to the creation of the earth, let alone the creation of the Unverse. And no, I don't think that the days of Genesis One are intended to be taken in the sense of six days as we know them now.

Personally, I'll let the geologists and astronomers tell us how old the earth and the universe are. And I see zero conflict between Big Bang cosmology and Genesis. I have no trouble at all accepting the 4.5 billion year figure for the age of the Earth.

True story -

I am not sure where my husband encountered this fellow but he had a rather unique version of how the dinosaurs became extinct. This fellow had read that the moon is moving away from the earth by so many inches a year in its orbit. He used this figure and calculated backwards and determined that at the time of the dinosaurs the moon was so close to the earth that when it orbited it would hit them on the head, killing them instantly - thus leading to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Seriously - this guy really believed it and kept trying to convince anyone he talked to that this is what happened.

Really can't have a 24 hour day if the earth wasn't created yet, so is a day 24 hours or an era? No one can dispute if their is an all powerful God, that the universe and all in it was created exactly one second ago, with fossils in the ground and memories in our brain. From observations we can make, the universe is constantly changing as is the earth, but seems kind of dumb to build expensive tall buildings in earthquake areas like St. Louis, New York, and LA. Or cities below sea level such as New Orleans. Does seem kind of mean of God to create the mosquito, but if you build your home in a swamp area where mosquitoes breed constantly, is that God's fault or ours?

I am amazed that we can communicate with sand off the beach, understand the basic principles, know to do it, but that discovery is positivity amazing and was made less than 62 years ago. Or that we have food already available to us, we had nothing to do with making a banana. Nor do we understand what makes us tick, reason, nor think, or even discover, can only wonder what we haven't discovered yet. Time is yet another very confusing subject, when we talk about the age, we are dealing with time, but time itself cannot be defined with space time theory and time warps. But we do know if we have to be at work a 8:00 AM, better be there is we want to keep our jobs.

Bottom line is that, we do not know anything, but kind of happy I can open my door without fear of being eaten by one of these:

40,000 years is roughly double figuring in your hypothesis regarding "begats so and so" but even quadruple it, 160,000 years old, and yes the timeline places Adam at the end of the 7 day creation story. Pretty certain even primitive cultures recognized days via the day and night cycle. However, even if we give you the benefit of the age doubt, the Bible still says the earth is flat. But I am fine if you choose to believe.

Some religious groups, such as the 7th Day Adventists have added dinosaur's to their "science" and say Noah brought them aboard during the great flood... Who knew?

The First Day (or "Day One" in the original language) concluded after the earth had been created, not before. And nothing is said in the text about 24 hours; the divisions are evening and morning. Actually, people back then, and for most of history till clocks were invented, didn't have the same concept of an "hour" as we do. We think of an hour as 3600 seconds. For them, it was simply a 12th part of the day or night, and not of a fixed length. Every day had 12 hours and every night had 12 hours, regardless of the season. Day began at sunrise and ended at sunset. In the winter, the hours in the day were shorter, in the summer they were longer.
