Anyone else joke with their wife/husband about immigration stuff?

My husband used to joke about how long the process was taking that I should just become a 'snowback' - that's a Canadian wetback :D . I joked back that it is because the US government suspects us Canadians of planning an invasion so they are being extra careful - after all, there are already all those snowbirds in Florida! Sometimes if you don't find something to laugh about in this process, you'll just end up crying instead.

This must be a clear violation of the TOS, using that term w**back is like dropping the N word. In most states that would be considered a hate crime...

I get banned for a day for talking about my Fisrt Andmendment rights and as a mod you can freely express yours. How nice.

We didn't feel like joking while in the middle of the process, but we do now.

Some time ago we had a little argument about how to file stuff, what to keep and what not etc. in our "office" room. So all of a sudden my husband starts digging in a pile of paper like a terrier and answered my question as to what he was looking for by "I can't find your #$%*&@# return label any more"!

The first time I told my Fiance' "Be nice to me... I am keeping my receipt" the only one laughing was me. 15 minutes of explaining why that was funny and more then a year later we both laugh when I say it now but I think he is just laughing because he remembers the first time I said it and how funny I thought I was.

I am not sure mom was right when she said "they are not laughing at you Honey, they are laughing with you"

There's freedom speech, and there's being polite.

Incidentally, nobody down south is "dropping the N word" in public anymore. But you do hear many nasty remarks about "Canadians." :innocent:

We laugh at the POE officer who told us when to get married.....we laugh at some of the questions on the various immigration forms.....we laugh when I respond in English and some people still ask if I speak English......we laugh at most of the immigration process because it is our way of letting go and living. We love to laugh...together

I believe she's saying that she and her husband/fiance don't really joke about things like that. She appears sensitive to that and notes that "douches", aka people who are rude and insensitive here in the U.S., assume that she's with him for a green card, a better life...whatever....when in fact she comes from a country that is not a 3rd world country, and has free medical and had a good standard of living. She thinks it's a touchy subject because "American's" have preconceived notions of those immigrating to the U.S., as wanting to come here because it's so much "better", and have their own opinions..."misconceptions" of people who come here from other countries.

Well... Don`t really want to give myself out... but I`m "a communist spy planning a large-scale Russian invasion.." When my husband introduces me to someone he goes :" And this is my wife Katrina, the Invader. Be careful talking about politics with her if you don`t want to end up in Siberia".

And while we were in the AOS process, he would always joke that my "communist past" could be a reason for denial.

Incidentally, nobody down south is "dropping the N word" in public anymore. But you do hear many nasty remarks about "Canadians."

It isn't just down south, I live in Chicago, and I hear Canadians getting bashed all the time. I've been living here for over 9 years now, and it is a recent thing (at least in Chicago). Mostly it is about how the Canadian health care system sucks and people here don't want a public health care system. I used to try and have a discussion with people about it, but most people just blindly don't want change. Just from personal experience, I hate the current system of health care here in the US. I got way better care back in Canada. Now do I support the public health care reform they are trying to pass in congress? I don't know.... I don't know enough about how it fundamentally works in Canada and other countries, and what they are proposing here, it may be awful. I don't just blindly want public health care, in any fashion. Whenever I try to have a conversation about it though, people always resort to saying things like: "If you don't like it here, why not go back home." Which is the worst argument I've ever heard. This is a small minority of people, not trying to make it sound like everyone is like that here, most people are really great in Chicago.
