FDR, Thanksgiving 1935, on why he wanted the New Deal to provide work relief rather than welfare:

"You cannot borrow your way out of debt, but you can invest your way into a sounder future... Over three years ago, realizing that we were not doing a perfect thing but that we were doing a necessary thing, we appropriated money for direct relief. But just as quickly as possible we turned to the job of providing actual work for those in need.

I realize that gentlemen in well-warmed and well-stocked clubs will discourse on the expenses of Government and the suffering that they are going through because their Government is spending money on work relief. Some of those same gentlemen tell me that a dole would be more economical than work relief. That is true. But the men who tell me that have, unfortunately, too little contact with the true America to realize that ... most Americans want to give something for what they get. That something, which in this case is honest work, is the saving barrier between them and moral degradation. I propose to build that barrier high and keep it high."

Are Americans of 2009 so different than those of 1935, that the work ethic FDR referred to has evaporated in our generation? I think not.

The Right believes that welfare makes people lazy and therefore has no redeeming qualities. However, they also tout about the helpfulness of private charities, so I guess it depends on the source as to whether it makes you lazy or not.

Why do you think not?

Do you really think you are smarter and more well-informed than the conservative intellectual Michelle Malkin?

I think not.

Oh, I know. It turns my stomach. This country is being destroyed from within by the unemployed and indigent.

Can't handle the truth hmm?

Maybe we need to put together Nazi-style concentration camps for the indigent. This ain't nothing some poison gas can't fix.

This just illustrates some of the consequences of a nany state. To bad you don't like seeing the truth.

I see it just fine. It looks like you don't have the stomach to solve the problem though. You just wanna whine and moan about the indigent but when an actual solution is proposed, your superficial middle class morality stops you.

I see that you have the stomach for the solution.

Care to elaborate.

Of course, corporate welfare is a completely different matter.

But let's not talk about that.

What America needs is a new WPA and TVA.

All sarcasm and baiting aside, the Right knows that people can and do need help, it's just that their rationale for why that help shouldn't come from the government is inconsistent. Government help makes one lazy. Private Charity help brings you back to church?

But of course! Them lazy bastards!! Death squads is the answer. They should learn work ethics from the likes of Enron CEOs, Maddoff's, etc... we all KNOW the unemployed and the poor are that way because they choose to be. Sheesh...

A lesson in work ethics from the Bernie Madoffs, the Enrons, the Worldcoms, and the Global Cossings of the world!

Too funny, Len!

In the 1936 election Norman Thomas, running under the Socialist banner for the third time, received 187,785 votes. That was 700,000 votes fewer than Thomas had received in 1932. The Socialist program was indeed being carried out by the New Deal, quipped Thomas: "On a stretcher".
