Between their UI and union compensation they actually make more than if they worked. Why should they get in a hurry to find a job? I even know a few that asked to get laid off so they could take an "extended vacation". I am not saying it is right, just that it is happening.

Automation is killing many jobs, like the cotton gin, the coat racks replaced people holding coats, electric fans replaced fanners, automatic pin setters replaced human pin setters, automatic door openers replaced doorman, paper shredders replaced paper tearer uppers, even know people that were replaced by a paper clip, that list goes on. But must be degrading to be replaced by a paper clip, little less degrading to be replaced by a computer for a routine clerical job. An earlier definition of a computer was a combination filing cabinet, adding machine, and a human.

As energy costs keep on rising, these jobs will come back. It's been a long time since I was unemployed, besides getting that check, main reason was, I was overqualified. But did try my best to get a job pumping gas at a self service gas station, another job that bit the dust, but not due to automation.
