Yes, another soul-bearing, experience-sharing bonding activity!

While everyone here in the US has been nothing but happy to have me over, I cannot say that the news of my Big Move is received unanimously well by those back home.

Canadians that I know tend to have a more condescending attitude towards the States, and there were too many times where the response was "Ugh. Why can't he move up here? Typical American, doesn't realize that there are better places to live in than the US."

They like my husband himself, but they hate that he is American. And of course, they are concerned about the current work situation. The most unique response came from my older sister, who warned me that the US may just revoke my citizenship (by means of treatment if not officially) if they ever have a conflict with Canada, as was done with peoples of the past.

I know there are more interesting stories out there than this, so let's here some noteworthy responses of people back in your home country when they heard you were moving to the States.

Aug 21/04 - Met at ethnic community bbq/field day (Seattle)

Aug 26/04 - First date (Vancouver)

Nov 24-29/04 - Met his mother & her side of family (Philadelphia)

Aug 19/07 - Our engagement & engagement party (Vancouver)

I'm the USC in our marriage, so all that I can suggest is a retort: "Thank you for speaking oot on the subject."

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Now that was funny !!

Haha, actually that is quite funny.

Well, where I'm going to be living, most of the people are actually immigrants themselves.

Or I would assume so, it's an Asian neighbourhood where I don't really ever hear anyone speaking English

Of course, being the only noticeable white person for miles has it's own circumstances.

But my mom has said "Why can't he live here?"

Parents.

Yes everyone told Farid that he would never find a job and he found a job before I did. I think they were just envious because no one in his town is in the US yet. And now when he calls friends back home they all want to know where he works how much he makes etc. And he just changes the subject to something else because they are still envious.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, eh. My wife is currently back in Ecuador for her first visit since emigrating (I will join her soon on a brief trip); her friends are most interested in how I treat her in the marriage. In her country (and much of South & Central America), men are "machistas," meaning that they exhibit macho behavior -- the ultimate double standard. The men can stay out all night with their friends, cheat with mistresses, not lift a finger to help around the home, and (yes) punish their wives if the wives dare take a night "off" to go out with their girlfriends, for example: "Where were you? What were you doing? Who were you with? You were cheating on me!" It's a facet of society there. My wife's girlfriends are fascinated that I will do laundry & dishes, for example -- a new concept, eh.

My friends and family thinks it is really cool that I moved over here. We are Vikings, being explorers is in our blood though my mom misses me and would like for us be closer to her. I have tried to explain to her that Dave would never find a job since he doesn't speak a word of Swedish (and I like it that way ). My nieces are really excited since having their aunt here gives them a reason to visit the States and they are REALLY excited about it. The best thing is that, for some strange reason, me moving here has brought my family closer together.

Well, some people didn't take it very well. Some members of my family ask why I couldn't find a nice Romanian boy to get settled in my home country, while a guy at work said: "Dang Americans, they even take our women!"

Well, pretty similar here (only it is a Serbian boy). I will marry Tim because I love him. It is annoying sometimes how some people have the problem to understand that. :bonk:

Here we go with stereotypes again ... is it possible for people to write without making stupid generalizations?

I don't know anything about you and your relationship, but just because you are married to an Ecuadorian does not give you the right (or the knowledge) to trash Ecuadorian (and South American) men in general. Maybe men in her family are like you say, but that does not make all South Americans what you want to qualify them.

I know plenty of South American families and in none of them the husband is a "machista" who stays out at night cheating while their wives are punished if they take a night off. That happens only in your dreams. In fact, if we want to continue with generalizations, these South American husbands are a lot better than most USC husbands that I know (who do indeed go out to drink with their buddies at night while their wives are at home caring of their children).

How about that? :bonk:

Hahahaha - I DID buy my own ring (but yes, it is real). That's only because I'm bloody impatient and I want a ring NOW - it was a long distance proposal so he didn't actually get the chance to give me a ring - but Jesse insists that he is buying me one (and that is the one I will wear, once I get it).

His family have asked him "why can't you find an American girl?" - despite the fact that they have all met me, and I'm actually very well liked in his family. I think they just don't understand why we'd keep up the long distance relationship when there are "easier" options available.

And of course, me being Australian and our quality of life being as excellent as it is - "why can't he move here?". He even got a very good job offer when he came to visit me so he'd be set if he moved here instead, which confuses people even more. We're doing it this way because we know it is the right choice for us, and besides, who says we won't move back to Australia one day? Even if only temporarily.

My poor mum doesn't really know what to do - she's so so happy for me, of course, but extremely sad that I will be so far away and I will miss out on seeing my little sister (she's only 8) growing up. My family here is very tight-knit so it is very hard to be away from them, but we do what we have to do. She also worries that if I ever have a child she's going to miss out on watching her grandchild grow - which is a very valid concern of hers. Dad hasn't said much about it (other than to ask me if he would get to walk me down the aisle), but you know what dads are like - no man is ever good enough for his little girl! I'm taking his silence as a positive because if he was against it, he'd say so.

July 2007 - met Jesse at a beach party held by mutual friends in Long Island, NY

May 2008 - J-1 visa expired, had to move back to Australia

July 2008-September 2008 - lived with Jesse for three months in Staten Island, NY

March 2009 - Jesse comes to Australia for 3 weeks

April 2009 - Engaged!

05/20/09 - I-129F petition mailed in

05/22/09 - NOA1!

05/25/09 - touch

09/09/09 - NOA2!

10/01/09 - due to fiance's illness, we are abandoning pursuit of K-1 at this point. Packet 3 received from consulate but won't be returned.

Even though I know it is a genarization, the reality of the matter is that the culture in south america is like that, at least the majority. I know, i'm from Venezuela. It is very sad that men still act this way but they do because is what they were taught. Of course there are amazing men in South America, specially the well educated one, that reject this behavior, but sadly it is the exeption, not the rule. Obviously, the women are part responsible because they accept this behavior and most ironically the mom's teach it to their sons. So its a hard cycle to break.

But we can't disregard the fact that not all men are the same and there are vast individual differences. Plus culture varies a little from country to country.
