Doesn't matter what a website says .... if they ask at the border and he decides that you need a passport you are not going to change his mind by saying " go look at the website" I think people are saying take your passport to be extra safe because things like that do happen and theres not a whole lot you can do about it ... and either side Canadian or the USA can decide to either let you in or not. But i can see certain things if you been in the USA a certain amount of years with no intentions of returning and you don't renew your passport you wouldn't have a valid one so maybe thats why .. and since the process to get it and it has your picture on it( or so i'm led to believe i've never seen one) i can see that too.

but if it's buissiness to be safe take a passport

You don't need a visa - the green card will do for both entry into Canada and re-entry into the US, but take your passport as well. Even with the green card I have been asked for my passport upon re-entry to the US, and you may need it for entry into Canada as well. It is always a good idea to have your passport with you if you are not in your home country. Enjoy your trip!

was that driving or flying?

Both. Flying 2 years ago and driving last summer.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

ok I always thought i needed a passport and I would feel better bringing it but I need to renew mine and I knew it would be easier to get the pics and guarantor done while I was in Canada instead of from here but looks like that is a no-go :P

That makes NO sense.

Oh great, you've got a green card! Wouldn't you like to know what citizenship I hold? Kind of silly to me. I always bring both. I've always had to SHOW both!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

well before the rules changed I always just showed my green card when I crossed over the land border into Canada, both ways...

and on my green card it says "country of Origin: Canada"

Yeah but...what if that's doctored or something by some criminal mastermind!

I don't know what nationality the OP is - but I am Cdn and I bring my Cdn passport to get back into Canada. I can't make do with my birth cert or anything less

I would not show my US piece of id (GC) to get into Canada, why would that make sense?

When i return to the US...I obviously use my GC because I'm a perm resident and I wouldn't want them to think I was just visiting the US.

I think I'm just confused what the problem was :) Anyway - I wish today would end and I could get home

I am also Canadian and when we drove in to Canada last week I gave them my Canadian birth certificate and my Alberta driver's license - no passport is required for a Canadian citizen entering Canada if you have the correct I.D. with you.

Now, if you are flying, the airline might have a different set of rules, which has nothing to do with WHTI - it just makes it easier for them.

(I know that is not what you are asking Marilyn and I also think the whole 'a green card will do' scenario for entering the U.S. is odd as well!)

What if the passport is?

Nah, the green card. Considering the millions of illegal immigrants in the US, I have no doubt that a ton of people are carrying false green cards or ones that don't belong to them.

yeah I don't know if I want to chance it.. I probably would be fine getting into Canada, just not sure about getting back into the US without a passport..

it would be whole heck of a lot easier to get my passport stuff taken care of in Canada :P but oh well...

I guess when we get back from San Diego I need to start saving so we can get our passports..
