I was wondering about moving my stuff.

I am downsizing ALOT and will have a very small move but I think that we've decided it would be best and easiest shipping my stuff down to the house in the US.

So, i'm wondering if any of my fellow Canadians have gone this route and who did you use to move? And what the average cost was. I called a company called PODS and they quoted me 2 grand. While not SO bad, I was wondering if I could get it done cheaper as I have/will have a very small amount of stuff. Maybe 2 or 3 pieces of furniture and boxes of books and my clothes and LGGs 'stuff'.

your help would really be appreciated.

Thanks so much,

LGG

I used United Van Lines when I moved and it cost me $1500 - mind you, that was 4 years ago. A lot of moving companies move your items depdning on weight, while PODS is a flat rate regardless of weight. I am sure if you call around you can get a cheaper quote. Plus - many times their prices are negotiable if you are adept at that sort of thing.

Good luck.

It also depends if you want to drive your own stuff down or trust someone to drive it down.

I'm probably going to do the PODS route, since I don't have alot of things... and I'm NOT driving from Toronto area to LA Area, haha.

Thanks guys...

We're not going to to do the drive either and it's way shorter than yours Rhiann...

I called PODS and they sound great, i just wanted to see if i could get a little cheaper than 2 grand. I don't have a lot of things either, or rather, I won't...

but it's something like 1 small coffee table, a small antique sewing table, a stand but heavy stand up antique radio, and a rocking chair and let's call it 40 boxes of books and personal things. In my books, that's not a lot of stuff. but if you factor husband's flight to get here, renting the truck, driving the 9 hours or so with a cat and such... it sort of equals about 2 grand anyway. Getting someone to drive it down would just be saving a lot of stress and hassle.

I'm just wanting to see if I could get it down to a grand. I'll let you all know what I find otu, okay? As I'm sure there'll be other Canadians in the same boat.

More input is wanted if anyone else has anything to add.

Thanks again guys...

I went with U-haul back in Dec 2004 from NS to the DC area. Truck rental was around $800 + gas! I only got around 10 mpg--as I was driving around 70-75 mph on avg!! lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you find a place for a grand let me know, I have found nothing lower then 1,700$ and I have checked alot of places. And im also in the same boat as you, only a few things of furnature and then personal items.

Flames how did you get it for 800$? Uhaul is almost 1,800$ when I quoted it, did you get the small van or a truck? I tried to get the small van but they dont allow you to rent that to go across statelines for some reason..

I agree with carslo - forget pods, ABF upack is much cheaper - you would probably be able to use a relocube perhaps.

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth. I have a uhaul booked. Greenwood NS to Antigo WI, around $1300. plus around $900 or more for gas. I called a local tractor trailer company who delivers across North America. They wanted $1800 for 6 pallet spaces. Tomorrow I am going to try United Van Lines. I almost think I am better off to sell my furniture, and just buy new when I get there since I really don't have a whole lot. I down graded when I moved into my much smaller house. Now I am going back to a large house. If you just have a few pieces of furniture you could try the small uhaul trailer to tow.

Just so that you know with the trailers, any space that isnt used by you is used for commercial stuff, your things won't be packed in with anyone elses. If its coming out to the same then its no big deal, but a few people have found it cheeper to go with ABF and I've heard some great reviews on them. The nice thing is their gas fees and all that are already included in their prices (not sure how the PODS are as we can't get them in our area)

Hey guys... lots of great advice here but... we are NOT going to be driving it. I have found a few companies so far and am getting quotes left, right and centre it boils down to about 1200-1500$ so far and that includes movers and such. I guess that's how it's going to have to be .But when I read that one of you rented a U-Haul for like 800$ and then had to pay for gas... well, that's about 1200$ right there.

anyway, will keep you posted as to what I find for anyone who is interested.

Thanks for all the great replies and advice and such.

:)

Thats what we have decided too lgg, the uhaul rental is more then ABF is charging us, plus we would have to pay for gas and pick up a tow to be able to get my car there too. So much less hassle this way
