I have a quick question about packages to Cairo

After I sent one small package to Wael, he had to pay when he received it more than it was worth I said no more sending anything thru their mail system. When I went to Egypt I just took with me the gifts I wanted to give his family. Did this 4 times and saved peace of mind and having to pay for items that the postal service charges dearly for. What a huge rip off. This was in Alexandria. So doesn't just happen in Cairo.

We have decided to just wait until one or both or us return again to Alex to take his family

gifts. It's a shame to have to think this way, but it's the only way we can be sure of his family

not having to pay outrageous fees for the gifts. Don't want them to have that stress.

Am so sorry Betsy to hear that his friend did that. I certainly understand your frustration.

Good luck!

My family sent many, many, many packages from the US to family members in Cairo via regular US postal service that never ever made it to our desired destination in Cairo.

The system here def. sucks but oh the joy of receiving Bath and Body Works... or a comparable item. You have no idea the luxury of life we enjoy in the US until you try living in Egypt.... using the products here... from hygiene products to clothes, etc. - they absolutely do not even compare in quality... aah, how I miss the US. :)

My favorite story is the friend who sent a fancy party dress to Egypt for her husband's little sister and it arrived about one year after she sent it... WORN AND DIRTY... Must have been a quasi-honest mailman with a daughter about the same size... LOL

I totally relate to you missing products from home. I saw some nice products when I was in Egypt but they are HORRIFICALLY expensive (even by American standards) and I also wondered how many years they had been sitting on the shelf because of the price... I simply tried to find a decent moisterizer for my face and had trouble...

However, I noticed that my SIL's etc. never really got all that excited about the bath products I brought them because they don't really use that stuff much and had nothing to compare with, so the fact that our products are so much better was probably lost on them. They did love perfume and make up... especially the kits (assortments of makeup etc.) that they sell around the holidays. Which fortunately are alot lighter than big jugs of liquid products. But the number one request for all the years I've been going is VITAMINS. And now Glucosamin/Chondroitin (sp) for everyone's bad knees and Fish Oil... they are getting sophisticated... LOL Dang those Costco bottles of pills are HEAVY!

Same request here!! They also requested Ester-C. I left a couple bottles there with them and

they swear it's some magic potion!!

You know even if their products are bad I thought Egyptian women have quite a way with doing their makeup! My 60 year old MIL puts me to shame with her makeup techniques!! LOL. I asked hubby if they needed anything like Glucosamine and he said no. Probably cause he's too prideful to let me buy anything for the family. You know HOW BIG the pride is of most Egyptian men.

My mom sent us a package to Lebanon and we had to pay a custom fee. She sent us a package here to Saudi to George's work address and we didnt have to pay anything. Luck of the draw i suppose.

Not luck, it's 2 different countries. Lebanon is poor and has to tax things to survive, and I believe they, like Egypt, believe that if you are getting something from out of the country you DESERVE to be taxed.... On the other hand NO taxes (including customs) in Saudi, on anything (that's why their French perfume is so cheap)... Saudi/Lebanon is not an apples for apples comparison...

True true bad analogy.

June 11 05-Married George, civil ceremony in New York

May 30 08-Baby Joshua was born

Jan 15-Back to NY we go...

May 10-made decision not to go back overseas.

July 10-filed for divorce

Jan 11-Divorce final

July 11-1st trip to take Josh to see George

Mar 12-2nd trip to take Josh to see George

This is mailing stuff to Egypt experience for me:

1- list all the items and the quantity written on sticky note and taped with clear tape on the inside of the box.( would be much better if its in arabic)

2- wrap everything with bubble wrap and tape it good(make it as difficult as u can to be open by the customs).

3- send by USPS, now pay attention to this.. all the packages have 100.00$ insurance on it by default ..tell the person in the post office to set it to 10.00$ only, this is why they pay so much to receive it in Egypt.

4- tell your family or who ever you are sending this to, go to the the local post office in Egypt and just complain that your package is not here yet.

I have been sending stuff to Egypt for the past 2 yrs and they didn't have problem receiving anything so far.

They usually pay from 50 LE to 100LE per package .. not bad.

Good luck.

I want to mail my sister in law and mother in law some bath and body works stuff to Egypt. My hubby said one of his friends told him that HE will have to pay a big fee to receive this package. Does anyone know if this is how it rolls in Egypt with packages?????

I sent a package to my husband last christmas that weighed about 6lbs. through the u.s. post office and paid around $50 in shipping fees. He ended up paying over 100LE for the "duty" fees.

So far everything I have sent, packages, letters, and cards has gotten to him.

Yeah, the last time I came here I ended up leaving my own bottle of glucosamine chondroitin for one of my husband's brothers... though it's still sitting here on the shelf, so i guess he never gave it to him. other things i have been asked to bring: Bengay/IcyHot, hemorrhoid ointment, shampoo/conditioner (this last time, customs popped the lid off and spilled it all over inside my suitcase. awesome.), acne face wash, and KY :P

I've never tried shipping anything to Egypt except documents, and I don't think he was charged any fees for that. i sent them via DHL and it cost an arm and a leg, but they made it to him unscathed.

My Mom sent me a package through USPS that had a flat rate of 70$. It had two big school books, a prom dress, a pair of jeans and some measuring cups. It actually arrived earlier than we thought, and we weren't there when he tried to deliver it. They got my husbands number from the doorman and called him, and he picked it up a week later. No fees at all. Strange...
