Oh, for ####'s sake. This is, without a doubt, the dumbest state I've ever lived in.

Wow- that's nice. I live in Florida and I believe it is my right to vote on such a bill. For the record, this is the first I've even heard of it. Just because one of our legislators dreamed up this bill does not make the whole state stupid!

Thanks!

Reading comprehension seems to be lacking here. It says: "A law or rule shall not compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system."

In other words no one will be forced into the system. If you want to be in it then you can.

That's probably the gist of it.

This is just AJ trying to stir things up. I am sure he realized this was a totally slanted and dishonest article. Never mind the troll.

It also means any new system including a mandate will be illegal in Florida.

Sounds good to me. Every state should pass a bill like this. The federal government shouldn't have the right to force anything on the states. If it is optional then that is fine, mandates take states rights to the wood chipper.

Heck, I think Florida should just secede from the union if they pass a mandate.

Why do you hate states rights and by extension the constitution?

OK, Gary, what about Medicare? We all pay taxes to support it? Does Florida think it can reverse the federal authority to set these taxes. (The Supreme Court settled that matter in 1937.)

That was a very wrong decision by the SC. It should be revisited. FDR had to stack the deck in the SC to get it through. The states have the right to ammend their constitutions to bar such things.

Actually, this whole debate is getting stupid. How are we ever able supposed to get anything done like this? If neither side wants to give at all. Or is that the point? Just to keep us all squabbling about this for years so nothing will ever get changed or fixed?

We've barely begun.

What did you expect, a quick week-long process? What do you think this is, some tiny and almost-homogeneous European country?

A proposed change of this magnitude in a republic of 50 sovereign and very different states... I'd be worried if it only took a week!

that is what the "Mighty O" is trying to accomplish ....

No, he's doing what any good manager does. He's making sure the ball keeps rolling. He's not letting the Rethugs bog it down.

No, he's doing the same thing he did with the stimulus plan, you remember the one he said if we didnt have the continent would burn away in a big ball of fire so everyone voted on it overnight without reading it....LOL

Earlier this week, Florida State Senator Carey Baker ® and State Representative Scott Plakon ® introduced a state Constitutional amendment that, if adopted, would prevent Floridians from enrolling in any federal health care plan. The language of House Joint Resolution 37 states:

To preserve the freedom of all residents of the state to provide for their own health care:

A law or rule shall not compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system.

"We believe this unprecedented power-grab by President Obama and Congress is clearly not in the best interests of the citizens of Florida," Baker and Plakon said in a joint statement ... [They] are sponsors of a "sovereignty" memorial, a measure meant to serve "as a notice and a demand to the Federal Government…to cease and desist, effective immediately, from issuing mandates that are beyond the scope of [their] constitutionally delegated powers."

...

The Orlando Sentinel notes, "Nearly 4 million Floridians are uninsured presently".

Yes, its a move to retain the STATES RIGHTS to GOVERN its citizens. This is a GIANT, OUT OF CONTROL power grab by Obama in a move to turn the US into a cradle to grave Nanny State. He is going to break our backs with this crazy health care plan. People need to wake up. YOU DO NOT WANT TO GIVE SO MUCH POWER TO SO FEW PEOPLE. Its just common sense people. Please wake up. Oh.......BTW.......I am a government employee.

What is giant and out of control is the many layers of wasteful government in this country, city, county, state then federal on top of it all. Whats wrong in this place is we all work like slaves only to pay taxes for all these micro governments to eat them up and then waste away anyway they see fit!

Best thing for it is to run things from the top down, let each state run it's own health care along side bloated and greedy private health care, let them run fire, ems, police, hospitals, education from the top and stop the counties and cities eating up all the resources and pishing it away on us. If you're going to have some power might as well have it done once and done right from the top instead of micromanaged and broken down on so many levels that it's so weak and wasted on stupid administrations!! I'm also a government employee and I've little doubt my job is being repeated at State, County and City levels when it could all be done once. Very wasteful and inefficient.. we need a lean, well oiled machine pushing us forward! This tangled mess needs to end we're just digging ourselves into a hole!
