can people bring let say about 2,000 dollars into the US from Vn? i heard you cant' bring more than 500, i think thats ridicilous

word for word on the rules:

There is no limit on the total amount of monetary instruments that may be brought into or taken out of the United States, nor is it illegal to do so. However, if you transport or cause to be transported (including by mail or other means), more than $10,000 in monetary instruments on any occasion into or out of the United States, or if you receive more than that amount, you must file a report (Customs Form 4790) with U.S. Customs. Failure to comply can result in civil and criminal penalties, including seizure of the currency or monetary instruments. Monetary instruments include U.S. or foreign coin, currency, travelers checks, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form.

There is no limit to bringing money into the US from the US government's view (we like it when people bring money here and spend it at US businesses) so long as any amount over $10,000 is declared (no money laundering please).

However, Vietnam probably has its own rules on the export of money. I've heard that it is nearly impossible for Vietnamese nationals to take money out of the country unless there is a business purpose which may require government approval.

From the Western Union website concerning wiring money out of Vietnam. While not the same as physically taking it out, the regulations are probably similar; http://www.westernunion.com/info/osMoneyTr....asp?country=VN

Sending from Vietnam:

There is no Maximum Send amount.

For Vietnamese nationals only: with requisite supporting documents, international outbound remittances of foreign exchange are allowed for specific permitted purposes, as follows:

- Payment of education cost of the applicant or his/her relative.

- Payment of medical treatment expense of the applicant or his/her relatives.

- Payment of costs related to work, travel and family visit.

- Payment of allowance to a relative living overseas.

- Payment of inheritance to a person living overseas.

- Payment for immigration purpose.

For non-residents living in Vietnam, sources of money needs to be verified with customs declaration form or labor contract and other related documents.
