Hey, my wife went to the SS office today to apply for a SSN a month after entering the country. I read a lot of posts here about how it should be possible even the first day after entering or at the most two weeks after entering the US. However, the (unfriendly) woman working at the office told her that she wasn't in the system and they would have to verify her with the DHS and this would add two months to the SSN process, a long time to sit around the house...

I was just curious if anybody had any similar experience or solutions. Thanks for any help you can give! Take care!

Sincerely,

Josh

Waiting to apply is no guarantee that the SSA office will be able to verify your status on the initial verification.

Unless a G-845 needs to be sent it shouldn’t take 2 months to verify immigration status. I would make sure that the secondary electronic verification request is done and they didn’t just jump right to sending a G-845.

If the secondary electronic verification is sent, they should normally have a response within a week. If that verifies, the application can be cleared. If immigration requests to see a copy of documents, then the Form G-845 gets mailed along with a copy of the front and back of the immigration document. They should get a response back from the G-845 in no longer than a month and if they don’t get a response they are to call the verification office.

So if you sit around and wait it could take 2 months or more. You need to keep going back to the office to make sure they have done what they are supposed to do.
