There is some truth to that. Just like pedophiles gravitate towards careers that put them in a position of authority over children (priests, boyscout leaders, teachers). That said though, I believe that law enforcement applicants are evaluated and psychologically screened...but I don't know if there's an effective way to screen out applicants who are just a$$holes to begin with.

Exactly. Just putting on a uniform doesn't give you the automatic right to be respected. How you conduct yourself day in and day out while conducting police business will do that - or not depending on how good a cop you are.

Yep...that's why there needs to be checks and balances (Civil Rights vs. Civil Law)...transparency, accountability. Without those in place and power corrupts absolutely.

So many people hate cops. I'll admit it, I dislike them when they're trailing my car or if I get stopped for speeding, but overall, the police aren't bad. Some individuals within any department may be, but as a whole, they're a group of underpaid men and women doing a thankless job in which most people dislike them. Cut them a little slack.

This isn't doesn't entirely cover the topic at hand, but the police are usually shown as the "bad guy." My wife was telling me about some sports-related riots in Edmonton after the Oilers won. Hockey fans decided to celebrate by destroying their home city. Needless to say the police didn't quite agree with that and started arresting them. Naturally the police got negative press.

It is disrespectful...no doubt. But if you support the 1st Amendment, you accept that some free speech is disrespectful and ugly. Unless a cop is threatened verbally, they have no right to arrest someone for simply saying something disrespectful.
