I cant wait to hear the other side of the story.

The officer clearly felt threatened by a gay man poking fun at cops. He was only exercising his rightful authority.

He was singing I hate cops, not the most classy guy, not sure I can trust his oppinion. I just want to see the police reports before I jump to any conclusions.

I recall another prominent case lately where police overreacted. In that case, the police report stated that the individual calling police spoke of "two black men with backpacks". When the take of the 911 call was released, it turns out the caller said nothing of the sort. When that caller was asked the race of the odd men she called about, she said one might be hispanic and she had no idea about the race of the other.

Nevertheless, the written police report fabricates a statement claiming the caller claimed both men were black. How can that happen? Why trust the police report?

Why trust the man singing I hate cops? I want to read the police reports so I will have both sides of the story before I state my opinion. Thats what reasonable people do. ;)

About the two black men with back packs. I dont think there was any malicious or misleading intent here, IMO they filled out the police report knowing that it was two black men and hadnt really thought about what the actual 911 dispatcher had said. This topic has been discussed to great length here at VJ, maybe your being sarcastic by mentioning it but if not where you?

I spoke repeatedly on several of those threads from my own perspective. My wife and I had the displeasure of experiencing a legal home invasion by three police officers interrogating us, separately, in our home concerning an argument that never existed but which they insisted we confess to. (The neighbor beneath us had been cursing at the Denver Nuggets for loosing a game -- alarmed neighbors, and police choose to harass us rather than the culprit.) My eyes were opened concerning the reality of police abuse in this country on that evening.

As I said before, and it is appropriate here, there are only two times you need to be afraid of the police: when you've done something wrong, and when you haven't.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has ordered an internal investigation into a gay man’s arrest for disorderly conduct after the man filed a complaint alleging that an officer detained and arrested him for expressing his dislike for police.

District resident Pepin Tuma, 33, an attorney in private practice, said the arrest took place at 17th and U streets, N.W., shortly after midnight July 26, seconds after a police officer overheard him telling two friends “jokingly” and in a loud voice, “I hate the police.”

...

In an e-mail to Lanier, Tuma said that after repeating twice to his friends in a “sing-song” voice, “I hate the police,” an officer “charged 40-50 feet towards us while yelling at me phrases like ‘who do you think you are’ and ‘who do you think you’re talking to.’”

“I said nothing at this time, except asking why I was being detained, whether I was being arrested, and my belief that it was not a crime to offer an opinion to my friends about the police,” Tuma wrote in his e-mail to Lanier.

He said the officer, later identified as Second District Officer J. Culp, pushed him against a transformer box, placed him under arrest and handcuffed him without immediately informing him of the charge.

“As Officer Culp moved me toward a police cruiser, he told me to ‘just shut up, faggot,’” Tuma told Lanier in his e-mail.

He said police took him to the Second District station at Connecticut and Idaho avenues, N.W., near the National Cathedral, where he was booked and released about four hours later. He said his release came after he agreed to pay a fine as part of a “post and forfeit” plea, which is an acknowledgement of possible guilt.

Tuma said he agreed to the post and forfeit plea after officers who processed his arrest told him he would be forced to remain in a holding cell before being presented before a magistrate in D.C. Superior Court had he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He said he had a longstanding commitment that morning and did not want to miss it by having to appear in court. Tuma said he plans to exercise his right to withdraw the post and forfeit the plea at a later date and fully contest the charge in court.

I don't know what the police were doing to provoke this guy's reaction, but I feel he should have a better

reason to do that other than testing his right to "free speech." I also know how "editorial bias" can leave

out such important information to make one or the other party appear guilty.

From my experience, I think some NYCity cops are absolute pigs. I'm not gay, not politically inclined to be

strongly liberal or conservative, but it's just my experience. They have an attitude problem where they

think they are above the law, maybe because of the 9-11 tragedy where they feel that that the world

owes them a huge debt, payable in blood at any given opportunity. I was a spectator at the Greenwich

Village Halloween parade a few years back. The parade was over and I was trying to walk north to

Grand Central Station so I could go home to Westchester. I was in the middle of a crushing crowd and

about the same number of people were going in my direction as in the opposite direction. When I got

to the northern intersection about to cross the street, 2 cops stopped me and said this intersection

was "one way" and I had to go back right were I came from into that crushing crowd. I argued with them

for a few moments, trying to be polite, but was told I would be arrested and taken to Bellvue Hospital

for observation (oh yes, I was crazy now). So I had to turn around and I almost got crushed by the crowd

just trying to get around that block in order to walk north. I was also lucky that I was in reasonably good

physical shape, because if I was elderly I am SURE that I would have died from exhaustion or from

being trampled. I thought for a moment of challenging the cops but didn't want them to "accidentally

lose" the expensive camera I was carrying. On the other side of the intersection where I was stopped

there was NOT a more crowded situation but a much less crowded one. I won't say all cops are bad

from this, but I did encounter some who definitely forgot their training about how to "Serve & Protect."

... "taunting an officer" on duty should get you a citation.

I disagree, but that's ok. We're allowed to disagree, since neither of us is a cop.

would you accept a vj member's opinion if they were a cop?

Regarding law enforcement issues, no. Bacon is bacon.

Expecting cops to understand your situation immediately was asking too much. For all they knew you were slapping around your spouse and lying about it when confronted by cops. You've led a pampered life if you haven't factored in these realities of crime in the U.S.

I was in the middle of a crushing crowd and about the same number of people were going in my direction as in the opposite direction. Of course the cops have time to argue with everyone in a crowd wanting to go in the opposite direction. Just take your lazy azz along a different route like everyone else.

Were also not putting our lifes on the line dealing with criminals. Cops deserve respect and I agree that they should be able to issue a citation.

Cops don't 'deserve' respect. Some of the shittiest human beings I know have gravitated to careers in law enforcement.

i thought they went into politics.

I was the one that had somewhat of a debate/talk with you about this issue. I thought we had come to a reasonable conclusion that you cant judge all cops because of your situation. Your response to this situation kind of gives me the impression that because of your experience no cop will ever get the benefit of the doubt.

Charles do you think his above statement that he tried to self moderate is really how he feels or his he just trying to get someones goat.
