Hi,

I just got done visiting my fiance in Cuba, he has his visa in his hot hands now. So he is waiting for his exit papers to leave Cuba and I am making preparations here for his arrival. He should be here within 2-3 weeks. He will be traveling here alone, I am scared for him to make the trip himself, but I think it will be ok. What should I do first once he arrives in the U.S? Do we get his social security card? State ID card? I am researching schools right now as well, I am trying to decide whether or not to enroll him in the free community college ESL classes or pay for Berlitz classes, he does not speak a word of English, only Spanish. Money is not the issue, I just want to get him into the best curriculum I can think of right now. We get married in November, but I know there are some things that I can do prior to marriage for him to get the ball rolling. Any advice for a new fiance touching U.S. soil would be great.

Gracias!

You may want to do a civil ceremony soon so that you can begin the process and have yourselves working toward the green card. Read the Adjustment of Status guide to understand the next steps.

In some states he would have to have a student visa to enroll without a green card. Private language schools most likely would not need any sort of status verification. Also, he may not be able to get a state ID with only a 90 day I-94 form.

Enroll him in a community college ESL, requirements will depend on the state you are in.
