I applied for my SSN today in my married name after marriage, it's been 18 days since my POE.

Just wondering if this is normal- they gave me a letter stating among other things that "Before we can issue you a Social Security number card, we must verify the document(s) you gave us to show your citizenship or alien status with the Federal, State or local office in the US that issued the document(s). This may take up to four weeks."

Also, does anyone know if/how I can find out what my number is before the card arrives?

Thanks!

Since they said up to four weeks, I suggest waiting till then before going back. That way you avoid making unnecessary trips to the SSA. Good luck!

I Would go back to the office to find out why your status couldn't be verified. If your maiden name verifies and you apply with your married name there is no problem and the application can be cleared,

You can go back to the office the day after the application clears to obtain your number, but you aren't going to have any idea that the application cleared.

This is no longer on the SSA Web site, but it's still valid.

RM 00203.735 Requesting Online (Primary) Verification By SAVE:

http://web.archive.org/web/20051002025945/.../lnx/0100203735

E. PROCEDURE—ONLINE SAVE QUERY RESPONSE INFORMATION DOES NOT AGREE WITH IMMIGRATION DOCUMENT

1. Name

e. Applicant Has Changed His/Her Name But SAVE Query Response Shows Old Name

In some cases, the applicant may have changed his/her name after DHS issued the immigration document (e.g., he/she has married and is now using the spouse’s last name) but does not present an immigration document showing the new name. In these cases, the DHS system reflects the new name only when the person provided the name change information to DHS and requested to have his/her immigration record changed to show the new name. When the SAVE query response shows the old name that is shown on the immigration document presented and not the new name on the identity document presented, do not consider this a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes.

I had exactly the same problem, went to get SSN on July 10th, was referred to DoHS, told 4-6 weeks wait and the local office called me today (as I have been phoning them every few days!) to say it was approved on Monday this week (27th) and once they receive it back from DoHS they will forward the necessary docs to me. So that was just over two weeks

The same thing happened to me, and I got my card in the mail in 8 business days. The 4-6 wait time they give is an estimate, most of the time it's quicker.

Removing Conditions

Sent package to VSC - 8/12/11

NOA1 - 8/16/11

Biometrics - 9/14/11

The 4 to 6 weeks is so you don't go back to the office and bother them. LOL

I would say 4 to 6 weeks is if a G-845 needs to be sent. A lot of times things drag out because the secondary electronic request or G-845 isn't done right away or no one bothers to act on the response from immigration.

Lesson learned from this is if you apply with your married name and your maiden name verifies and the SSA employee says they need to do more verification, start yelling for a manager.

yeah, they didn't actually tell me that it needed more verification or anything had gone wrong, she just slipped me the paper and said it's be 4 weeks or so. it took me until after i'd left the office to realise what happened, or i'd have questioned it there and then. still, lesson learned. i'm able to go to the office on monday with my ID and they will tell me my number which is great.
