If his lawyer is even allowed to speak in the hearing to decide whether to fire Officer Barrett, I hope the panel smacks him with some truth. That cop doesn't deserve to wear a badge, IMO. He's a disgrace to law enforcement.

Well it probably isn't the smartest thing to do as a government employee, but I'm still not clear on the context of the letter the guy wrote.

If we're talking about a leaked personal email or something like that then you'd think it would be categorized under free speech.

I don't condone the remarks, but the reaction to them seems rather over the top. They might still fire the guy, but behind closed doors without making a big media spectacle about it.

Dude, he wrote it hoping to have it published in the editorial pages of the newspaper. He also wrote speaking as a cop. He's a racist POS and should not be on the force.

No worries, his career in law enforcement is over. He can never credibly testify in court, therefore, he's useless. Maybe mall security is his true calling.

As a police officer, you can't even make the distinction between that sort of viewpoint being personal or professional. Either way, it shows a demonstrable prejudice towards a group of people and any testimony from this officer would be discredited at best.

I hate cops; have some close friends who are cops and they really do enjoy bashing heads (they come home and brag about it) and this is a tame MD state and county police I'm talking about. He should be fired though. Americans deserve fairness and equality (really). Having said that I was watching Thai TV last night and a cop was shooting at a pack of kids who were fleeing the scene of a street motorcycle race. They then showed (right on TV and were bragging about it) a couple of these kids getting the ####### kicked, battoned and smacked out of them....just for motorcycle racing.

Once I heard the gunshots, I told me fiancee "#######, they're stupid kids doing what stupid kids do-no need to shoot them all"!

Remember, the US is still tame compared to some other places, Prejudice is alive and screaming here in Thailand-refusal to serve, snide comments, etc...even on TV! I had no idea till I get here these small ethnic minority and majority groups who are not the ruling minority elite get crapped on a LOT. Human trafficking is another thing I won't go in to but I was trying to convince some people to seek asylum but they were worried about getting killed (over here they enjoy enslaving people who look different). These people were tricked, blackmailed and enslaved in Bangkok. It shocked me!

Most cops get out of hand when they perceive the suspect will not "submit: to their authority even if the officer's commands are unlawful (get out of the car, etc).
