No, I'm not looking for a fight, actually...but I think your view of the word 'hero' is really skewered. If one does not want to follow orders, one should not join the military. As Charles posted...there is an oath that you swear. It's not 'hey lemme see what you planned for me and THEN I'll decide if I want to go' It's the military. Military goes to war. If one is against being called to deployment for a military action, WHY OH WHY would one join the military?

He's not a hero, he's a liar & a thief.

You know what really chaps my hide? The fact that ANYONE could even say (with a straight face) that this man is a hero.

THE REAL HEROES GO WHERE THEY ARE ORDERED TO.

THE REAL ONES ARE THERE!

Does ANYONE here that any military personelle is like 'Iraq?!?!? bloody fanstastic!!!' NO But they go anyways because of their OATH that they swore.

I will go you one further, this so called 'hero' of yours is a coward and a disgrace to the uniform & I personally hope they throw the fkin book at him.

To all the military families and servicemen and women who read this:

THANK YOU!!!!

YOU ARE THE HEROES and you have my undying gratitude (L)(L)(L)

And here I am again, because I look at the thread title, and it just completely disgusts me.

Steven, do you not see that by calling this man a hero, you completely discount the efforts of our servicemen and women all over the world? Do you not think THEY are the heroes? Do you think that every one of them is whooping it up having a ball? It's called sacrifice and doing one's duty. And THEY are the heroes...not some pansy ### disgrace.

Because if you believe that this guy is a hero....well then all who go where they're ordered to go are conversely NOT heroes. So really, which one is it?

*exhales* I think I'm done now, lol

some call this clown a hero. but before he's done serving his sentence, he'll be forgotten about. i doubt anyone here will recall this idiot's name in 5 years. he certainly does not deserve the mantle of hero, like audie murphy, chesty puller, and others that deserve that title.

surely those who fought at iwo jima are spinning in their graves when some think this guy is a hero.....

Hey, I'm married to a officer out of Ft. Lewis who is currently deployed to Afghanistan.

I agree that the war in Iraq is illegal...however, I fully support our troops.

I stand by Watada's conviction's, however his conduct is unbecoming of an officer. He joined right after 9/11. Did he really not think that he was going to be deployed to a war zone?? Quite possibly he signed up with an agenda. While I'm not sure what the military is going to do about this one, team-wise he has not set a good example for his peers.

If Watada was opposed to war in Iraq, he should have spoken-up before deployment. Had he done so, he could have been declared a conscientious objector. However, once the orders are given, one cannot receive this status for the obvious reason that one didn't really object in principle - one is simply a coward.

Well said.

Seeing as how this guy is from Hawaii, and I live in Hawaii, it has received a lot of attention from the local news channels. Even here in Hawaii, the veiws/opinions are mixed.

Whether you think what he did is right, or wrong, is really not the point IMO. That would be like arguing the abortion issue.

The point is the fact he stood up for what HE believed in, and the fact that even being faced with going to prison and being dishonorably discharged, he did not back down or change his stance.

Something to think about, because there aren't that many people these days willing to take that kind of punishment for something they believe in.

I totaly agree Welshie and, as a veteran myself, I personally think it was the wrong decision.

I just think the fact that he didn't back down when faced with serious punishment says a lot about his determination/convictions.

In other words, he didn't make idol threats!

roi,

Agreed. His heart may be in the right place, but the appropriate time to make this choice and ask his conscience was much earlier.

Robert, read what his lawyer said again, he was not expecting what faces him now...

...[W]e expected him to be charged with missing movement or violating an order to get on a bus to accompany his unit to Iraq. We did not really anticipate that they would charge him with additional offenses based upon the comments and the remarks that he's made. And that opens up a whole new chapter in this proceeding, because what the Army has clearly tried to do by the nature of these charges is send out a message to people in the military, that if you criticize the war and if you criticize the decisions that were made to bring the United States into this war, that you, too, could be charged with disloyalty, contemptuous remarks and disrespect for higher officers, and in this case, specifically in this charge, the President.
