I did a study essay about Organic foods versus Genetically modified foods in college. (I also got 94% on it :P )

From what I've found out, I would never buy organic foods.

Because over the years, farmers and scientists have cross bred things into seeds and crops that will help it ward of bugs and diseases. They've been doing this for a really, really long time.

So how do we know we're even getting "organic" food if all the seeds are already genetically modified?

Unless someone somehow stashed seeds from 20+ years ago away.

There is a distinction between hybridizing plants and genetically modifying them, even though Monsanto wants everyone to think it's virtually the same.

I believe I have read that they do both.

I remember reading quite an old book about hybridizing when I was doing the essay. It made sense really.

I also did read about genetically modifying the plants. I didn't enjoy having to read it, lols.

Cause that's my food damnit.

Yeah, IMO....I think Monsanto is about as evil as a corporation can get. They're real bastads...like suing organic dairy farmers for putting labels on their milk products stating that the product doesn't come from any cows treated with the bovine growth hormone. Or bankrupting family run farms because one their patented seeds germinated onto the family farm land without Monsanto's permission. F@#$@# evil motherf2#$@#!

They have their hands in just about anything and everything... uuggghhh do not get me started on them!

Hi hi hi! Yep-- it's me! the ultr-conservative tree-hugger... ROFl...like a SNL skit... I didn't know you were an anti-monsanto-er too. I think their going after farmers for wind-pollinization and whatnot of their crops is completely ludicrous, in addition to the fact that they are trying to completely contract up the ME and other world areas with their ####### seeds...

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Keep in mind that "organic" foods, or the title thereof, is a lightly regulated moniker. You may still get an "organically titled" chemical bomb and not even realize it.

That said, we are growing several types of chili plants, tomatoes and herbs and have seen some peculiar pests attacking them.

As a "pesticide", we mix Thai chili powder with water, pour it into a plastic spray bottle (99 cents) and load up the plants.

Seems most bugs, worms and beetles cannot handle spicy food!!! Works great.

LONDON (Reuters) – Organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food, according to a major study published Wednesday.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.

A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.

"A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance," said Alan Dangour, one of the report's authors.

"Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority."

The results of research, which was commissioned by the British government's Food Standards Agency, were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Sales of organic food have fallen in some markets, including Britain, as recession has led consumers to cut back on purchases.

The Soil Association said in April that growth in sales of organic products in Britain slowed to just 1.7 percent in 2008, well below the average annual growth rate of 26 percent over the last decade, following a plunge in demand at the end of the year.

Most "ORGANIC" foods are simply stamped "ORGANIC" in order to increase the price.

Make sure the bottle is BPA free though.

I'm not an organic eater. If I can get some organic apples and peanut butter I'll get it but it's hard to get here without having to travel for hours. I buy locally grown foods if available but other than that I pretty much buy what is offered in the grocery store.

We have a health food store in town that sells all organic stuff. Comes in a brown paper bag stamped with on of those ink stamps, Organic with another such ink stamp of what's in the bag. N0 Nutritional Facts are listed nor the ingredients so if you did pay a fortune to have this stuff independently analyzed, wouldn't even have a basis for a lawsuit as no clear definitions for what is organic have been clearly defined. All the vendor has to prove that the contents of this package contain traces of carbon in it, if it does, it's organic.

I like to know what I am paying 2-3 times the price for. Same as fresh produced in our grocery stores, just says it's organic with a much higher price tag, I suppose to be safe, would be to buy something with a bunch of worm holes in it.

Maybe in the US, but not in the UK where this study was commissioned and carried out. The standards are rigourously enforced.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Was a guy on WPS, (Wisconsin Public Radio) screaming about this, we are a corporate owned country with a corporate controlled congress. Does he make a strong point on this subject?

Dude, that's another chemical that's commonly used in PD research.

If zeee soil is depleted and overused it doesn't matter if you farm organically or not.. you can't get healthy foods from soil that's overworked and hasn't been fed.. it's basic farming principles.. crop rotation is critical and allowing soil time to take a break is necessary.
