All I know is if I didn't spray my apple tree, would be a zillion worms in each apples, always good to wash your produce, with microwaving, best suggestion for vegetables was to cut the time in half, still crunchy, but kills those germs that can also kill you. Organic foods in grocery stores are twice the price, with no detail why they are so good for you. Sounds like another ripoff.

We have a large garden and "try" to be as organic as possible. We tried all kinds of organic ways to keep the bugs away and ended up not having hardly anything to eat. Bugs got most everything.

We now use the least and mildest pesticides we can and have a eatable crop.

I guess we may die of something other than starvation!!!

For those of you who have never grown your own tomato (juts as an example), picked it and eaten it right there, you have no idea what you're missing.

You're taste buds go into orgasmic delights.

Of course I'm talking about those of you who not have poisoned your lawn and veggies with Monsanto's Round-Up and/or other pesticides and growth hormones.

For those of you who's common sense leaves you when you read "A STUDY", well, what can I say to you?

Nothing really.

You are what you eat.

Eat pesticides, higher risk of cancer and other unmentiionables.

Not to mention killing the natural ecology.

Poisoning the rivers, hence the fish, insects, birds, lakes, trees, oceans, etc.

The list is long.

And in the end it is all poisoning us.

You and me, baby!

Enjoy.

There are "clean" techniques to keep bugs at bay.

There are plants to grow by other plants to attract the bugs away from your food.

There are lady bugs and other insects that help too.

I forget all this stuff.

Time to refresh my memory.

Research is fun!

That means you have a predatory imbalance. It would be a matter of attracting/adding the right insects mostly, followed by attracting certain birds, bats, etc. Usually, though, the biggest issue is the loss of predatory insects--since they are killed along with the pests every time one uses insecticides. it takes a couple of seasons to restore a balance, but is worth it in the long-run. Sometimes, though, it can take years to restore the balance and other times it's an imported pest (like the cabbage looper) causing an issue. hand-picking is the best way to deal, but time-consuming. I go years without using pesticides, but one year I used insect killer and doused a bunch of japanese beetles. Happens.

ROFL! Potatoes come from South America. Seriously someone is saying they are not naturally occuring? How could one man-make something like that? Unless they mean selective breeding? because that is the story behind every single cultivated crop...

Wonder if they took in account the pesticides vs no-pesticides (non-organic vs organic)?

that's not always what goes into organic though.. sometimes it's based on the fertilizers and sometimes the pesticides, and sometimes both.. but honestly, I'd say it should be more of a wash beyond the pesticide level. Fresh fruits and veggies in the store are picked at the wrong (least nutritious) stage (not ripe) and are bred for ship-ability and not vitamin content. Add to that the fact they go to sleep in shipping and are often weeks old (thus causing serious break-down of nutrient levels) and you should have similar situations. Frozen is often actually more healthy, and of course growing your own would be the best.

I did a study essay about Organic foods versus Genetically modified foods in college. (I also got 94% on it :P )

From what I've found out, I would never buy organic foods.

Because over the years, farmers and scientists have cross bred things into seeds and crops that will help it ward of bugs and diseases. They've been doing this for a really, really long time.

So how do we know we're even getting "organic" food if all the seeds are already genetically modified?

Unless someone somehow stashed seeds from 20+ years ago away.

There is a distinction between hybridizing plants and genetically modifying them, even though Monsanto wants everyone to think it's virtually the same.

I believe I have read that they do both.

I remember reading quite an old book about hybridizing when I was doing the essay. It made sense really.

I also did read about genetically modifying the plants. I didn't enjoy having to read it, lols.

Cause that's my food damnit.

Yeah, IMO....I think Monsanto is about as evil as a corporation can get. They're real bastads...like suing organic dairy farmers for putting labels on their milk products stating that the product doesn't come from any cows treated with the bovine growth hormone. Or bankrupting family run farms because one their patented seeds germinated onto the family farm land without Monsanto's permission. F@#$@# evil motherf2#$@#!

They have their hands in just about anything and everything... uuggghhh do not get me started on them!

Every single cultivated plant is selectively bred (chosen for certain traits). Beyond that, you have hybridization... which most of our vegetable crops are hybridized. That does NOT equal GMo in any way, shape or form and it also doesn't mean it's not open pollinated. "Heirlooms" are usually open polllinated hybrids. For example, I have a couple hundred variety of tomatoes (because as MC can attest, I love tomatoes), and they may go back as far as 120+ or so years... they are heirloom mostly, but all open-pollinated. Saying one doesn't trust hybridization would be an interesting concept, but I am not sure if you realize how far back you need to go (20+ years ago? Ummm there was serious hybridization back 500+ years ago, so you need to really go back... a very famous example being Mendel's experiments) or realize exactly what you're asking to return to per se. Also, if it's just straight GMO you're worried about, the lists are very public as well as who owns what. People may not realize that seed rights are bought and sold, and even if a seed isn't GMO, monsanto may own it. It's not any kind of mystery at all and takes a couple of minutes to figure out via google. There are whole companies dedicated to selling non-GMo and open-pollinated things.
