Hm gotta ask my dad what he did, but he uses something organic with the raspberries. No worms there. My relatives keep geese in the garden, they love to eat snails and other bugs... Very reliable and not harmful at all (and - vegetarians better not read this - those geese end up on the plate often for Christmas)....

Oooh, Anna, let me know. I was so bummed out because we had a HUGE crop of berries....all bad because of the worms.

gotta grow that alfalfa in between crops.

I grew up, surrounded by cotton fields which would be replaced with alfalfa for next couple of seasons. I believe cotton just robs the soil of nutrients more so than most other crops. My father was an Ag major and worked for Dow Chemical back in the 50's right out of college.

I did a study essay about Organic foods versus Genetically modified foods in college. (I also got 94% on it :P)

From what I've found out, I would never buy organic foods.

Because over the years, farmers and scientists have cross bred things into seeds and crops that will help it ward of bugs and diseases. They've been doing this for a really, really long time.

So how do we know we're even getting "organic" food if all the seeds are already genetically modified?

Unless someone somehow stashed seeds from 20+ years ago away.

There is a distinction between hybridizing plants and genetically modifying them, even though Monsanto wants everyone to think it's virtually the same.

But what if the inbred genes aren't a problem at all? (Devil's advocate question.)

Indeed... organic only means method, not source. Farmers have been doing all kinds of breedings with crop plants for thousands of years to maximize yield.

Its when you have firefly luciferase being expressed in the tobacco some Vjers en up smoking... or beetle genes making kernels of corn huge end up in the Dorito products some folks like to eat here... that it becomes a major concern if those products can cause health concerns for people.

I believe I have read that they do both.

I remember reading quite an old book about hybridizing when I was doing the essay. It made sense really.

I also did read about genetically modifying the plants. I didn't enjoy having to read it, lols.

Cause that's my food damnit.

Yeah, IMO....I think Monsanto is about as evil as a corporation can get. They're real bastads...like suing organic dairy farmers for putting labels on their milk products stating that the product doesn't come from any cows treated with the bovine growth hormone. Or bankrupting family run farms because one their patented seeds germinated onto the family farm land without Monsanto's permission. F@#$@# evil motherf2#$@#!

Couldn't agree more. Two friends tried out working there. That's all I am going to say about them. Other than

they are Evil incorporated and deserve to be put out of business

I am afraid of most bagged corn products.

Have any of you noticed more digestive products over the last couple of years after eating these (mostly corn) products?

You can buy seeds to grow yourself that are not hybrids - they are extremely interesting and here's another important point BIODIVERSITY. Do we know how many varieties of potatoes there are, for example? There are 100's and yet you try to find more than 3 different varieties in your local supermarket. I bet you can't.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Care to throw some free plane tickets in there too?

It is sad. When I go to S. America I try to catch up with as many varieties as I can. I think I'm somewhere in the 20s now for spuds.

I heard that potatoes aren't a naturally occuring plant and that they're man-made.

Is my mom right or is she trying to be smart?

I heard this too. Strange. We must ask the Idahoans. Perhaps they don't actually have potato farms. Hmmm. And if not... where do Idaho Potatoes really come from?
