Our raspberries this year were infested with tiny white worms. I will be spraying them next year with an 'organic' pesticide. Because, ya know, tiny white worms are DISGUSTING and they ruin any plans to make homemade raspberry jam.

The plums were fine though....

Oh and I generally buy produce at Costco because we eat so much of it, and supplement that with fruits and veggies from our local farmer's market.

I buy lots of our fruits and veggies at Sam's. I gets lots of good stuff there. I am very picky about my produce so I check everything carefully- I am rarely disappointed by the stuff they have.

Actually wild growing plants produce their own naturally occuring pesticides.....otherwise they would not survive in nature. Those naturally occuring pesticides can also be harmful.

Justbecause something is being grown organic does not mean it is not being treated with pesticides. The fruit or vegetable crop would not survive if it were not being treated with something. Usually they are treated with naturally occuring pesticides not synthetic ones. But even naturally occuring pesticides like sulfur based products can cause illnesses in some people.

So just because something says organic doesn't mean it is healthier.

Darn.

Which naturally occurring pesticides would those be for them not to be artificially synthesized and used on a crop? I'm super curious now.

I love WF for their smokehouse- they make some awesome BBQ. They also have great pizza- 2 big pieces for 5 bucks. Yum! I go there a lot to pick up something for lunch.

Yeah I'll check that out. In a pickle its a good 'cafeteria.' Yum.

Ferric phosphate

Copper

ethylene

fatty acid potassium salts

aluminum sulphate

calcium polysulphide

potassium permanganate

quartz sand

sulfur

calcium hydroxide

potassium hydogen carbonate

to name a few

some are naturally occuring others are not but are approved for use in organic soils and on organic foods.

just because you see a chemical name does not mean it has been excluded for use in organic farming or agriculture.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I personally prefer a nice helping of farm animal with my pesticide ridden leaves.

But that's just me.

Then I wash it down with the bottled water that's supposed to be better than tap.

Wonder if they took in account the pesticides vs no-pesticides (non-organic vs organic)?

I am wondering about that, too. The point of organic food for me is that they do not contain certain toxins, and I never expected them to contain more nutrients.

Exactly.

Agri giants have no incentive to produce food that tastes good - it's not even a consideration. The main consideration is producing more for less. Produce can't be traced back to individual farmers so as long as it looks good, can remain looking good for all the days it takes to take it from the field to the supermarket shelves and sit there for a couple of weeks before it's bought it's acceptable.

Agri giants must use whatever the latest gimmicks are in order to be competitive, even though that means most of the food produced actually burns about 4 times as many calories in it's production than is ever released in its consumption (the actual figures can often be a lot worse than that)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Yeah I'll check that out. In a pickle its a good 'cafeteria.' Yum.

Ferric phosphate not harmful- might even be sort of beneficial for anemics.

Copper Not harmful, but in excess concentration is toxic to cells.

ethylene Monomer is OK, but if it polimerizes to PEG in excess water and an acid/basic soil, its not cool to have in ya (think diarrhea! LOL).

fatty acid potassium salts YUM. Good for you most of the time.

aluminum sulphate Accumulates in tissues. In water it dissolves (its ionic) and increases the concentration of aluminum... with some links to Alzheimers.

calcium polysulphide causes calcium poisoning.

potassium permanganate helps kill bacteria in our blood... but it can also mess with a female's gestation.

quartz sand goes right through our digestive system.

sulfur Satanchemical. LOL. Probably don't want too much of this.

calcium hydroxide Stuff burns. Plus since its ionic it reacts with other sodium salts to create calcium carbonate deposits. You don't want this in your urinary tract!!

potassium hydogen carbonate another ionic salt.

to name a few

some are naturally occuring others are not but are approved for use in organic soils and on organic foods.

just because you see a chemical name does not mean it has been excluded for use in organic farming or agriculture.

*looking at the chemical inventory shelves 15 feet from me*

I'll make a couple of comments about that list in red above.

By naturally occurring, you mean these comprise mineral components of soil and rocks. Not really biologically synthesized by plants in great enough concentrations to create a chemical barrier to pests. These would be organic (in the chemical sense) compounds.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

That's why they use GMO- by engineering plants to use genes from other species, they end up with whole new proteins sometimes that are for the most part not harmful to human biology... but sometimes.... you see cases of people having allergic reactions.

Bigger is not always better.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Hm gotta ask my dad what he did, but he uses something organic with the raspberries. No worms there. My relatives keep geese in the garden, they love to eat snails and other bugs... Very reliable and not harmful at all (and - vegetarians better not read this - those geese end up on the plate often for Christmas)....

Soil erosion is big problem with corporate farming....and it becomes a vicious cycle - more chemical fertilizers are needed to in order for anything to grow as the soil become deplete of any natural nutrients.
