I am a US citizen living with my husband in the UK on a spousal visa and have been since October 2008, my visa expires October 2010 - can I take the test whenever between now and then, or do I wait until a certain time to do so?

Also, taking this test means I'd be a dual citizen of both my home country and the UK right? Or does it mean I'd be giving up my US Citizenship?

Thanks in advance for answers :) x

moved from US citizenship forum to the UK regional forum as it deals with UK citizenship and more likely to find the requested information here.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

The test needs to be taken before your visa runs out and you apply for permanent residency, but it is not for UK Citizenship - its a 'Life for UK' test.

Its supposed to show your knowledge of language but its really nothing to do with language at all - more of the knowledge of Great Britian.

So if thats the case could I take it now even though I haven't been here 2 years? and could I move eventually in 5 years or whatever (example) and still be considered as indefinite leave to remain here and move back if I wanted 10 years down the line?

I don't really understand.

Sounds like you're exactly where I am. I've been living in the UK with an FLR for less than two years and am about to take my life in the UK test to get my ILR. I will eventually go for citizenship. Here's the timeline:

Just before your two years is up, you take the life in the UK test and apply for the ILR. After your THIRD year in the UK you can apply for UK citizenship since you're on a spousal visa (I think it's 5 years if you're on other visas, don't quote me on that but I am absolutely sure about the three year wait). You will then be a dual citizen of both the US and UK.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me cos I may forget to check back

Hmm this is interesting to know. once you guys take your tests I'd love to hear what you had to answer. Not that I'll be doing it for awhile but nice to get an initial idea of what to expect when my time does come.
