How long can we travel outside the US?

Just to show you where we are in the process, my husband received his employment authorization card the other day. Both of us have the travel bug and love to go (even work as teachers) outside of the US for long periods of time. Is this even possible? How long can he be out of the US? Would this hurt/look bad when it comes time for permanent residency?

Thanks for any input!

He would have to apply for AP before he can leave the country. Has he? If not, he'll have to wait for his Green card which does allow him to leave for extended periods of time - less than one year I believe. I would wait til the GC comes to be safe though.

Unless you have an emergency, its generally discouraged to use the AP. What if USCIS requires something form you regarding your application and you are away and unable to attend to it. If you do need to travel on the AP, you can stay for away for the validity of the document. Good luck!
