Well, im going to start the k3 process soon. My wife doesn't have a passport yet, i told her to get one asap. BUt she asked me if she should get one with her original last name, or get one with my last name since we're married. Which way should she go to cause the less confussion or trouble???

Did your wife change her name when she married you?

It is not necessary to have your wife change her name on the passport, but likely her green card will be issued in what ever name is in the passport.

Good luck.

PS - K-3 is an obsolete visa. My advice, file the I-130 (and only the I-130) for the Cr-1 visa.

Not sure about this but i think it depends on the type of ID asked but since you are married it would probably be good if it has your last name. I hope someone a situation like yours will come to your rescue!

with my wife we got married on Monday, Tuesday she got her named changes. so on Wednesday when we went to the hotel for our honeymoon she could sign her married name. If she is planning on using your last name, It would be better to have her do the name change first, then do the rest...

To save changing the passport at a later date, get the passport in the name your wife will use on her greencard.

She uses HER current legal name. If that's the same family name as yours, so be it but she uses HER name. The answer is going to depend on whether her name changed upon marriage. My wife's didn't but many do. Don't put the cart before the horse.

Well, her name is still the same. But im guessing she should use my last name, right? I bolivia they use both their parents last name, fathers first and mothers second. So all her documents have her parents last name. My question is, now that we're married should i get her to get her passport with my last name using the marriage certificate? and then change what i can to match the passport liek her ID, but birth certificate and police reports ect.. woul stay the same. Will that effect me in a negative way, or would it matter at all? What should i do? or just tell her to get a passport with her parents last name?

All documentation should be in her current legal name. If it changed at marriage, you have a lot more than a passport to worry. So, you must first know the answer to, "What is her current legal name?" because that's the name she'll be "using".

Your question puts the cart before the horse. What is her name today?

I think he just wants to know if it will look better if she changes her name to his name.

Its a personal choice whether she changes her name or not but once she gets here it will be too late for a long time.

As long as the name change process doesn't take long and she likes the idea of changing her name legally from her maiden name to your family name I don't see any problem with it!

YEah, she's not changing her first name. She's simply getting a new ID stating that shes married, and a passport. The only thing that's being added is my last name. So she it would be (original name - my last name- her father's last name. I don't see how i have to change all that legally, if it should already be official after we got married through civil. My question is since her ID and passport will have my last name, her married name, would that affect any other documents like her police report and birth certificate, which will have her maiden last name. Or do i need to get those changed, or those don't matter and they will assume that she's using her married name?

The customs and assumption vary by country. Certainly nobody ever presumed my Chinese wife changed her name at marriage. It's just not done. Stop assuming and determine what is or will be your wife's name. Then proceed accordingly. Getting a police report will likely require that she indicate any and all names by which she has been known. First step is, "What is her current legal name?" Then take it from there.
