Angie and I just went for our Marriage Certificate at the Milwaukee County Court House (Wisconsin). I just thought I'd share our experience. We went in and the woman asked us first for our birth certificates. We don't have Angie's - I think the embassy in Lima took it during the interview. Her passport was acceptable. The woman looked at the Visa and the I94. We filled out the form, which was simple enough. When we turned it in the woman changed a few things. She crossed out my parents middle names because they are not on my birth certificate. And she had us change Angie's residence - I put my house because that’s where she is now - but the woman had us change it to Lima, Peru because she hasn't lived in Milwaukee for the last 30 days. She also looked at my SS card and my Driver's license for proof of address (she just asked for any document with my address). We took the oath, signed the document, paid $100 in cash, and that was that. It will be ready in 1 week.

I was relieved that her passport was sufficient. Any ideas on where her birth certificate is? Would the embassy have it? When will we get it back? I don't think they gave it back to us. I hope we didn't lose it. :s

Something of probably higher interest to some of you happened to another couple when we were in there. They walked in and the woman asked for their birth certificates. The man only had a copy of his. He explained that he was born in Brazil to American parents. He is a US citizen, but only has a copy of his birth certificate. All the woman said was that they have to get the birth certificate from Brazil and sent them away. They were not happy. It was sad.

When you go for your marriage license, call to make sure you have the correct documents. The Milwaukee Co. website did not say anything about foreign people getting married. I would have never known that a passport is acceptable had I not called. And make sure you give yourself enough time. As I've seen several times before in the forums, every county in every state can have different rules, so make sure you call the correct place and find out what you need. Good Luck! :star:

if you provided the embassy the original of the birth certificate (and it was not returned) it is now a part of her permanent immigration file (most likely in the envelope she carried to the POE). You will NOT be getting it back.

YMMV

Hey, man!

You can find it from here.

Google is always your friend.

In most case, valid passport can be substitute for birth certificate. :innocent:
