I believe the base cause is a conflict of interest issue.

Someone born in another nation is not going to be willing to go to war against it if required. Or may not be willing to sign laws resticting trade to that nation and so on...

I don't see the problem so long as certain conditions are met (like being a citizen for at least 20 years).

Don't see the problem with say, Arnold Schwarzenegger running - though I probably wouldn't vote for him.
