U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich says he’ll be “actively involved” in the battle against proposals to expand gambling in Ohio, and that includes the plan to add slots at horse racetracks that was approved by the legislature and Gov. Ted Strickland.

“We don’t think what they’re trying to do is constitutional,” said the former governor, who has long opposed gambling issues, at a meeting with Dispatch editors.

The GOP’s biggest problem? “We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It’s the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners. The party’s being taken over by southerners."
