I pay 16 cents/minute plus $4/month with Qwest.

I used to use Qwest. The 16 cents a minute is only to a land line. If you call mobile it's 23 cents a min. I got rid of Qwest and I'm using a cheaper service. 16.5 cents to mobile, 12.4 cents to land line. No monthly fees!! No maintenence fees! Get free referral minutes by clicking the link.

I tried talkloop but the sound quality sucked. I think they are routing calls on VOIP.

I've had really good luck with them so far. Every once in while we get a bad connection. My girl has DSL now so thinking of trying the Vonage route.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

I've used a VOIP service for home phone for a couple of years now and it has been pretty solid www.lingo.com when my wife's parents can get broadband service to their home we are going to ship another lingo box to them and get them a local us phone number. Lingo offers a flat rate lingo to lingo box phone plan for $7.95 a month.

$80/month unlimited both directions http://www.pinoycalls.com/

Cox cable recently offered a Philippines plan that's $8.95/mo and includes the first 60 minutes. Additional minutes are 13 cents/min

VONAGE OR SKYPE ALL THE WAY.....Vonage cost me $25 per month and i talk as long as I want.

I also use my skype for free calls.

Thought about Vonage. But my cell is my only phone so I don't think that works.

Even if you only have a cell it would still work.....sign up with Vonage then send the phone

adaptor to you SO so she can call you and you can call her any time and it's a local call.

For me this is a God sent. My bill was running over $1000.00 per month before Vonage.

Vonage has been great for calling within the US but Kenya is not in their package and even though the UK is supposed to be included I found out the hard way that not all numbers in the UK are included. And the cost of calls not covered in their plan is much higher than even just using a cellphone. So, before signing up for vonage call them and ask them if specific numbers are covered, not just locations but ask about the number(s) you will be calling.

And yes I sympathize with all of you. My bill was around $1500 for a few months. NOw I am 'trying' to use Pingo. When I can connect and the reception is at least good enough to have a conversation the cost is great. All of these obstacles can be tough but, hey she's more than worth it.

Skype is the cheapest I know.

I just got skype to use on my cell phone and it gives you a special phone number to dial... its like dialing a number in the states. If you use your computer you can use a headset or hook a phoe adapter up to your cpu and use it like a norman house phone.

skype is expensive to start off with, i mean, if you're going to call from skype to her phone. skype to skype is free. there are other video chat apps, like yahoo, google video chat, voxer(?), and many many others.

google voice, in my opinion, is the cheapest. but it will use your cellphone's regular minutes. there are ways around this, by dialing out through the computer, or using an app called talkatone on the iphone. (i don't know methods for non iphones). you will need a google voice number, which is free.

http://speedypin.com check there for phone cards. i just saw this through this thread, and seems .3c cheaper for me to call russia than google voice. but there are all these other fees involved, i didn't want to look into it. i'm comfortable with google voice.

google voice rates:

Country Google Voice rate per minute USD

Philippines - Landline 11¢

Philippines - Mobile 15¢
